Courtesy of ksurkin. My favorite bottle format, green 0.375L with super wide cap, pours murky amber with copper edges and full mocha head. The aroma is big pine hops, earthy hops, sweet slick malts and some citrus hops that feed into tart red wine like notes. The taste has pulses of tart red wine and wood that are tempered by thick sweet malts and robust levels of pine hoppiness. Behind those notes some spicy hops and earthy hops seem to rattle around in the background. Into the finish sweet maltiness seems to roam around amid tart red wine and bitter hops.

Pours dark crimson / brown with a tan soapy head. The aroma has lots of deep caramel malt, richness, light barrel, cream, brown sugar, toffee and light hints of red wine. Full body with lots of smoothness and flowing semi-soft carbonation. The flavor starts sweet with brown sugar, lots of malt, alcohol warmth, caramel, toffee and a hint of oak. The finish adds some light red wine notes and is very woody and robust. Nice beer overall.

Bottle. Dark amber beer with a tan head. Caramel and red wine aroma with oak and vanilla. Caramel and light toffee flavor with oak, earth, and vanilla. Medium-plus bodied. Caramel and light fruitiness lingers with oak and earthiness.

JanLaursen (3227) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - APR 3, 2012
Draught at Mikkeller Bar. Hazy orange-reddish with virtually no head. Aroma is intensely woody, slightly tart, quite sugarcoated malty, with notes of caramel, toabacco, red wine barrels and hops. Flavor is rich and sweet, medium bitter with strong notes of oaky barrels, toabacco and wine grapes. Long lasting finish with quite an alcoholic touch. Complex, dificult to describe.

Dark rusty red color, fairly big cream head. Aroma is quite sour, actually, like a well-spiced spanish red wine. This is balanced out by some sweeter stuff like strawberry and grapes. The oak is quite strong and adds to the sourness. Lots of red currants and some raspberry. The whole thing is surprisingly belgian. Very interesting. Upon incessant swirling, the aroma reveals a cautious hop presence. Taste has the same fruity and sour characteristics with a strong sweetness. I haven’t tried the original Big Worse, but from what I hear it is quite hoppy. This is quite the opposite. Perplexingly, really All the different elements balance out neatly, rendering this beer entirely enjoyable.

On tap at Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. Hazy dark brown colour, moderate off-white head. Distinct aroma of oak / red wine barrel, a hint of fusel alcohols. Also notes of dark dried fruits. The flavour is very oaky, the red wine barrel does indeed dominate. Decent hops in the finish. Warming mouthfeel. Very tasty and interesting!

Wow, must say I was surprised it came out dark amber when i poured this one in a snifter. Smelled the bottle before pouring, smells really aweet, with cherry the most markant. This beer is great for sipping, and can replace red wine in mostly any scenario. As for beer, I like them more distinct, but this is really great craftmanship and well balanced beer.

Bottle. Pours red/amber with a big fluffy white head, a little sediment throughout. Nose is wood, cranberry and red whine. Light notes of caramel and vanilla. Taste is red wine barrel up front. Some boozy vanilla, almost bourbon like notes. Red wine in the finish. Palate is full and soft. Lots of booze and heat. Nice beer but not as good as the base beer. Also wish the red wine differentiated itself a bit more. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

375ml Bottle. The pour was a murky brownish purple with an average (1-2 finger) khaki colored frothy head that diminished slowly, down to a thick film and large collar with excellent sheets of lacing.

The aroma was big and strong of a dark bread malt and a sweet yeast with notes of caramel, red wine, dark fruit (grapes, plums and prunes), candi sugar, a hint of oak and a decent alcohol tinge.

The taste was heavily malty sweet with a bold vinous presence from the start, progressing with a bold bitterness, a bit of dark fruit and a large alcohol taste with the end having a slightly fruity mildly woody taste. Flavor lasted an average duration following the swallow, with a sweet fruity alcohol warming sensation being the last thing lying on the taste buds.

Mouthfeel was almost medium in body and dry in texture with a somewhat prickly carbonation.

Overall this is a very unique tasting Barleywine (in a good way). It possesses a ton of fruity flavor that only complimented the vast other flavors offered in this brew, which together did a stupendous job of slightly mellowing the extremely high ABV... www.facebook.com/KAJIIsBeerReviews
