Burnt sugar and maltiness. But the hops are there too with some pine and citrus. Nice balance. A bit bitter batter before being barter between beating bottom. Pours a deep red with a small tight head. The aroma is big and malty with some cherries and some earthy hops with a little bit of alcohol witch in this case was warming and nice. The flavor was big but simple and entirely enjoyable with notes of cherries, some hop spiciness and a nice brown sugar and caramel sweetness. danielcurtis81 (917), San Diego, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 3, 2009 Bottle about 2 years old. Pours a bubbling amber color with a small white head. Dark fruit, dry red wine, candy sugar, alcohol, bourbon, prune. Still hot after 2 years, perhaps I should have waited longer. MAP (1089), Lakewood, Ohio, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 1, 2009 Single bottle purchased at Chuck’s in Chagrin Falls. Pour is a nice- dark with a thin head, buuuutttt the real money maker is the aroma. Its got this rich, earthy, bourbony, dark fruit scent. Seriously, this smells full and rich and slightly aged. Flavor is smooth at first, very full of malt but not overpowering with any of the standard malt aspects, this is well balanced between the sugar, the malt, the hops and the alcohol. God, this is fantastic. Too bad the bottle costs like $10 and isn’t even a full 2 glasses. Ober (1245), Bommelerwaard, Netherlands

Lots of nutty almond malts on the nose with a touch of honey. Very sweet maple syrup flavor with strong malt notes. Bitter alcohol finish. Theres a funky, fruity, earthiness with a strong acidity to it. Interesting flavor. glennmastrange (870), hobe sound, Florida, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 23, 2009 Bottle. Moderate to heavy malt aromas of cereal and caramel, moderate orange and perfume for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with background notes of brown sugar, date and alcohol. Head is very small, with big bubbles, off-white, with almost no lacing but has good legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is murky brown. Flavor starts heavily sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and lightly acidic and bitter. Palate is full, creamy/syrupy, with a soft almost flat carbonation and finishes moderately alcoholic. This a very nice Barley Wine, to be savored for sure. I’m surprised by some of the lower scores.
