Tried @ Grain Cru - Roll Out the Barrels, Belgian Beer Café.
Deep ruddy brown and not quite bright; the appearance honestly of unused motor oil. Very little evident carbonation and headless, it leaves a sticky film upon the glass as it is swirled about. Nose has treacly sweet, toffee and caramel with so much caramelised stonefruit and sherryish notes to off-set the eye-watering, open and potentt, boozy alcohol that wafts like a thick vapour. There is little nuances of hazelnut, marmalade, palm sugar and dark candi in there that play straight onto the palate. Oily, liqueurish body, well rounded, spicy as hell with pronounced sherry and Muscat port notes. Sticky date pudding with a mix of dried fruits and peel - raisins, sultanas, muscatels, dates, orange peel - is broad across the palate. Light, almost residual carbonation allows the beer to dwell upon the tongue. Very long, warming, spiced fruit-port swallow edged by woody, nutty notes and a looming sweetness ends it. I was surprised by this one. As high in ABV as it was it showed such great balance and poise. Very nice. A memorable beer!! (Batch No.1, 2010 vintage, 17.6% ABV, Cellarbrations Carlisle)

17.6% Version. Cloudy amber beer. Floral hoppy nose with elderflower coming to the fore. Light airy palate, dry but not overly so. Sweet floral hops, elderflower, chamomile. A whisper of well buried hop fruit. All underpinned by intense sweet toffee malt. Finishes with some Port Wine tones. Bloody Nora! This is a good one! Not heavy like you might expect and with some unusual flavours for a barleywine.

UPDATED: MAY 16, 2012 Pours Clear and shiny goldish yellow with no head - just some simmering of the mousse. Aromas of peach, almond and butter (like a crumble coming from the oven), alcohol, honey and pineapple. Full body with initial sweetness that is immediately overtaken by the warmth of the alcohol and it bites quite hard. Flavours only come in the finish as the alcohol wears out - nuts, port/sherry

PhillyCraft (5736) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 10, 2012
Bottle. Pours a moderately carbonated pinkish orange. Medium head, small amount of sticky white lacing. Aromas and taste of bannana bread, fuel, slight dogfish nail polish remover yeast, sweet barley, tons of caramel malt and crystal malt. I understand this beer was 18% but it was still very hot in the chest. Not hidden well at all. Finishes with a boozey mango mead flavor and aftertaste

On tap at The Old Toad after free steak dinner I won from work at the Fairport Inn. Clear golden with no head. Spicy Belgian yeast, esters, alcohol and banana on the nose. Heavy sweet, alcoholic, fruity and malty flavors. Full body, alcoholic warmth. The 1st sip gave me flash backs to the Yukon Jack days of many years ago. It tasted like there was that much booze in this.

Bottle. 17,6% vol. Hazy copper body with no head. Aroma is raisins, dates, candi sugar, alcohol, fruit, Flavor is quite boozy with notes of raisins soaked in some sort of booze, candi sugar. It has a light sour swallow. The alcohol burns in the mouth for a couple of seconds. Soft carbonation, oily texture. Average.
