courtesy of fiulijn - quite clear amber colour and with a moderate head retention; aroma of marzipan and chewy malts with notes of alcohol and solvant; full-bodied and very sweet; a huge alcohol kick, residual sugars and almondy hoppy finish, slightly fruity

Bottle @ home. Burgundy, Dr. Pepper colored appearance with really no head. Strong, sweet, berry, vinous, boozy nose. Strong, boozy, sweet berry, incredibly malty flavor with a big warming finish. Not really my cup of tea.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Faintly hazed foxy red beer with medium, sligthly yellowish head as whipped eggwhite. Fruity aromas jumping out of the glass, especially passion fruit, also mango, orange, grapefruit, white grapes. And USA hops, getting drier, hopbales like. Very fruity bittersweet flavour; bitter oranges, kumquats, grapefruit, pineapple- and strawberryesters. Caramel, toffee, maple syrup and fusels. Oh, and some hops... Alcoholwarming, very slick-oily. Fiery, yet drinkable. Warming up, benzeneFruitester bomb, superbly hopped, yet adequate malts. Mikkeller seems to get better every month... though this one reminds me of Mikkels’ first homebrew Barley Wine I ever tasted.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
My Bottom Line:
Hefty, unrefined caramel builds a portly body for this bold Barley Wine, as minty, green wooden hop flavors attempt to create some complexity.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sliver of foam floats atop the cloudy pale red.
-Alcohol flavors are overdone considering it’s over 17% abv...
-That being said, I would never have drunk this by myself. Way too powerful and just not pleasant enough.
-Brown sugar flavors are overwhelming, even after a few sips.
-The malts don’t present much more than basic sugar flavors.
Bottle from the first batch (17.6% abv).

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
12.7 ounce bottle from Capone’s. Pours relatively clear dark straw with minimal white head. Quite frankly, this one looks wimpy. Nose is perfumy floral spices, hops, and sadly some plasticy fusels, almost to the level of a yellow rain coat thrown in a blender. Tastes rich, sweet, with notes of malt, syrupy honey, dark fruit, floral spices, and hops. Comes off like a spicier Irish Mist mixed with apple wine. Heat is apparent early and often. This one is unique and unconventional, but it cannot be denied that it is a bit of a mess. This one makes Weyerbacher Insanity seem like Fullers Vintage Ale.
Rerated 11:51, almost finished. This one degrades as it warms, getting pretty bad late. This is the first Mikkeller beer that I have had trouble finishing.
