Barley wine as an experiment. All colours are involved. A liquid is strange, strong, stinky, alcoholic, earthy with nose of last century old wooden barrell and old aluminium pipes. I think you need to drink more overpriced bottles to recognize what animal you drink. B@H

Another delicious barleywine. Mikkeller has done a nice take on the American barleywine. Really tasty treat and while this is difficult to find in the Norhtern NJ/New York City I won’t hesitate to pick another up when I see it.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2010 Bottle. Hazy brownish orange pour with a short, bubbly white head that doesn’t stick around long. Aroma is quite boozy, and fruity as well, with notes of peach, apricot, pineapple, spice and caramel. The alcohol is less noticeable in the flavour, although it’s still there, but the fruitiness is much bigger with extra citrus and tropical fruit notes. Mouthfeel is fairly heavy and oily, with moderately low carbonation and a slightly warming, sweet and fruity finish that lingers a while. I was all set to find a multitude of faults with this but as it turns out it is actually very pleasant. Not exactly subtle, but considering the abv, this is fairly restrained. Overall a very good brew and great as an after dinner sipper.

Pours a deep orange-red body with a medium off-white head. Nose is wild strawberry, vanilla, boozy and bitter, grassy hops. Taste is deep sugary wild strawberries, with raspberries, hints of oak and booze in the back. Palate is smooth and filling. Warming alcohol feeling is nicely integrated in this mighty powerhouse of a brew. A deep, heavy barley wine truly representing the craft of Mikkeller once again. This is the stuff greatness is made from.

What a delicious barley wine. Pours a very opaque dark amber color (caramel?) with a thin off-white head. Aroma is a bit funky. Very floral, earthy, and sweet smelling. You can definitely sense the presence of alcohol in the aroma. Surprisingly sweet tasting. I was expecting a lot of warmth from the alcohol but it was not as strong as I anticipated. In fact, I dare say that it’s a drinkable barley wine! That sounds kind of oxymoronic, but I believe it to be true. I’ve become a very vocal supporter of Mikkeller beers since first tasting the brewery’s offerings a couple years ago, and this is just another example of why Mikkeller is one of the world’s finest breweries. Kudos!

This has a hard to detect aroma, maybe mint or paint?? Very pale for a barley wine, golden with red highlights. The flavor has a very noticeable alcohol burn to it, with some heavy malts and hops behind it. At the beginning I didn’t care for this but it sort of grows on you, its subtle in that the alcohol dominates initially but the depth of it is in the pale malt.
