3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
20th February 2014
Fare thee well Josh tasting at Bruce’s. Thanks to Josh for this Mikkeller rarity. Opaque dark brown - black beer, small pale tan head. Palate is smooth and dry. Smooth malt, rich and tangy. Bitter dark toffee and tangy dark fruits. Little.spirity fruit, touch of paint. Mild dark chocolate and coffee. Mellow Port wine. Finishes dry and warm. A complex and warming beer but it never quite realises it’s own potential.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared in London for my farewell drinks. Picked up at Mikkeller & Friends bottle shop. Pours black as black with a creamy khaki head. Nose is big and ashy just like previous Black’s but with some peppery spice, dirty earth, prune like sweetness and vanilla oaky notes. A fair bit of heat there. Taste is big dark chocolate, honey treacle, vanilla, big bourbon-like spice and an oaky feel. Slight hints of brandy in there. There is a balanced smokiness throughout but not peat-like with a light aniseed rush on the finish. Absolutely chock full of flavours and complexity. This really does have a lot going on and it comes across as a toned down version of Mikkeller Black Fist. I like it a lot

Noire. Léger collet moka. Nez: légèrement acide/vinaigre balsamique. Vin rouge. Betterave. Liqueur de café. Bouche: liquoreuse/vineuse. Très boisé. Épicé. Vanille. Chêne. Bien sucré. Forte amertume. Très riche. Intense chaleur d'alcool. Excellente, mais je préfère la version régulière.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Black with a medium sized beige creamy head. Alcohol, sugar, meaty smoke, roasted malt, chocolate. oak, bourbon. Taste is close to heavy sweet and medium bitter, sharp alcoholic. Full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation. Roasted malt and alcohol in the finish. When the initial alcohol shock settles, this is quite nice to sip on. Big, but not overly boozy and somewhat drinkable.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of molasses with light roasted malt notes with some alcohol notes clearly evident. Taste is also dominated by molasses with loads of residuals sugars with too much warming alcohol notes for my taste. Body is about average with good carbonation and too much alcohol noticeable. I had quite a few better imperial stout from Mikkeller which kind says bad things about this particular one.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
375ml bottle shared with jeevan. Jet black with a thin tan head. Aromas mostly booze, something nutty, rum-like, marzipan maybe. Woody notes come through too. Quite a thin palate, but lots more of the same on the taste, bit of alcohol burn. Interesting. Should maybe have left it a couple of years to meld things together though.
