thewolf (3608), Kolding, Denmark Jul 2, 2007 Bottle. [thank you Grovlam, this is soooo stunning]. Well, this was an experience.
It is absolutely pitch black as it reluctantly pours from the bottle, as engine oil, it slurps around until the head reaches the top of my glass. Head is not impressive, very brown, but only a small film. You would think that from an 12,5 % beer - difficult to maintain any head at that ABV. Aroma is stunningly complex. There are coffee notes, liqourice (though quite subdued), and oaky whiskey feel, some raisins, alcohol and a touch of sweet vanilla. Carbonation is quite low, lending the beer even more a feeling of engine oil. Flavour is both complex soothing, warming and refreshing. Roasted malts is the first to hit me - almost with a coal-like feel to it. Chocolate appears as well alongside the vanilla. Very full, very round and finishes with a good pang of bitterness at the end. Somewhere along the way, the oakyness settles in my cheeks and a lingering raspberry edge appears.
This is stunning brew art, and a million times better than Mikkellers X Stout (at least the 2007 version).
I heard a voice saying that this beer was to get a larger release!!
darn1207 (244), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Aug 25, 2008 My birthday beer... well, I’ve had a few birthday beers already - but this is the one I’ve been saving for the occasion. bottle from peabody’s in boone. Just noticed it has a date of 8/14/11 on the cork -- so didn’t really let this one age I guess. pours black with a medium brown head. aroma of alcohol, coffee, ginger and prunes. first thought on taste is: thick palate and long coffee/alcohol burn. other thoughts: butter, roasty, molasses, chocolate, black cherries, malts. kinda has a wine vibe to it. it’s definitely an experience. good one to sip, analyze and enjoy. K-8 Soonah (490), Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA Aug 24, 2008 Pour a dark, if thin, brown color with some ruby highlights and a short tan to brown in color head. Minimal flecks of lace. The aroma was hops, coffee, light chocolate and some vinous notes. The flavor was roasted coffee, faint pine hops, faint chocolate and some vinous hints. On the dry side, avoids the cloying sweetness. The mouthfeel was thin to medium in body and the finish was abrupt. Decent. stobbe74 (168), Denmark Aug 21, 2008 Bottle, 70cl. Pours a pitch black beer with a chocolatebrown head. The aroma is coffee, chocolate, some flowers and sweetness. The flavor is alcoholic with chocolate, licorice and coffee. The mouthfeel is dry, and overall this is a nice imperial stout. Nightfall (308), Athens, Greece Aug 21, 2008 0,5 lt Bottle found at Beer Paradise in
Holstebro. What a fantastic beer. Pitch black color with big very dark brown head. Very impressive. Aromas and taste of coffee, vanilla, caramel, liquorice, wood, red fruit and more. Perfectly balanced and very complex.
Amazing ! 1_2many (220), Ohio, USA Aug 18, 2008 Bottle labeled 13.1%. Pours black with very little head even as I practically dumped it into the glass. What head it had left very small spots of lacing. Aroma is dark roasty malt, coffee, chocolate, and some floral hops. Flavor was a little strange. Something about it was a bit sour which threw me off but otherwise it is mildly sweet with a lot of bitterness. A different flavor for an Imperial stout which tend to be more on the sweet side but I like the diversity. The alcohol makes itself known as well. As I continue to drink this it is becoming less bitter and more sweet but that strange small bit of sourness is still there. Mouthfeel is a little thin but still decent, otherwise everything I would expect. Long aftertaste and low carbonation. Very good but a little disappointing for me. I thought this would be much better.
