b33r (332), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jan 11, 2008 Updated: Jan 12, 2008 Ok for all the posts I’ve made about imperial stouts being overrated and a fad, this beer may have changed my mind. I don’t know how many times I’ve said I’ll never pay $10 for another imperial stout...but I broke down and thought, when am I ever going to be able to try Black Hole...so I bought it. And it was delicious. Now I’m just mad that Speedway and Expedition weren’t as delicious. Now I’m going to have to spend more money on all those stupid Imperial Stouts I swore I was never going to try....
Anyway...Dark brown color with small diminishing dark brown head and very little lacing. The rich aroma is the best thing about this beer. Intense roasted aroma that’s a little musky and sweet. Flavor is very good. Extreme coffee flavor as to be expected, creamy and sweet in the middle and bitter at the end. At 14% abv it’s a lot better than Mephistopheles- more flavor and less alcohol burn. Surprisingly, I didn’t get bored drinking it like some beers- each sip was as great as the one that preceded it. There aren’t many 12 oz. beers I’d buy for $10, but this one was pretty decent.
walleye (813), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Jul 19, 2008 Poured black with a small brown head. Aroma sour, bitter chocolate, alcohol, coffee, old shoe leather, vinager, some dark fruits. flavor, ash tray , some sweetness like dark cheeries that do not have alot of flavor to them, coffee nbutler11 (40), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jul 18, 2008 Poured like it’s namesake from the bottle, with a tan/amber head that evaporated nearly instantly. There is little evidence of any carbonation, but I swear that this is made with champagne. There’s plenty of spice and cocoa, but the eement of champagne seems to push this beer into the realm of decadance. Veer (321), Landskrona, Sweden Jul 16, 2008 Aroma: wine, honey, pepper, lovely, dark malt. Vinous as hell, sourish, coffee, vanilla, very piny & powerful hops. Tabascolike scent. Preserved strawberries. Rose hip.
Flavour: Peppery, malty, coffee, chocolate fudge. Very peculiar bittersweet flowery backbone. Elderberry & honey. Overall on the bitter, dark malty & floral side. Oatmeal can be sensed. This is freaking magic. Vinous...
Apperance: reddish black, slightly cloudy body with brown rind. Brown beige superfine bubbles leaving a film of foam. Quite spectacular.
Palate: velvety, smooth. Vinous. Slippery & dry feeling. probstk (627), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Jul 15, 2008 375 ml bottle shared with Lubiere, served cool in a goblet.
App.: Deep cola brown with ruby hints, tiny light mocha head.
Aroma: An assault on the nostrils! Big black pepper, green resinous hops, some black coffee and dark chocolate, smokey.
Palate: Medium-full body and sparse carbonation.
Flav.: Very aggressive green peppercorns, huge amounts of resinous hops, some sweet malts but they are struggling; very spicy, quite bitter, biting and young; oily and mouth-coating..
ENORMOUS and needs to age I think. Doggythedog (921), Split, Croatia Jul 15, 2008 Bottle, RBESG08 grand tasting. Almost black brown body. Nose... hmm... elder? Very pleasant. Dark malts. Nice heavy malty taste, elder again, alcohol, big roasty bitterness. Way better than the Black, but it just isn’t my style.
