colemgm8 (388), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Jun 15, 2008 bottle. quite delicious, although not worth the high price, when you can get a 6 of storm king for less $$. pours a mild black with a nice 2 finger tan head. great licorice, coffee and plum aromas... excellent on the tongue and palate. thick on the tip of the tongue with the licorice / coffee flavors coming through the most... soft on the sides and thin underneath.... big and full on the top and powerful on the finish. the licorice notes and alcohol come through really strong on the finish, which makes this one stand out... the 14% is not really noticeable at all... until you get up.... a really solid imperial stout.... definitely glad I bought and had one, but I can’t justify the price again....
Naven (729), San Diego, California, USA Oct 12, 2008 Deep rich, dark pour. Smelled like coffee, soy sauce and dark malts. Flavor was much of the same: Soy sauce, chocolate, coffee and malts. Incredibly strong. Overdone, sweet and just too much.
Not a Mikkeller fan, sorry. Whiskeyjack (10), , Massachusetts, USA Oct 4, 2008 12.7 oz bottle. this may be one of the most inspiring beers I’ve had the pleasure to drink. It starts with a smokey sweet fragrance with coffee and roasted barley scents. The only way to describe the appearance is darker than night with a full dark head. It sips like liquid gold. It has a flavor of coffee with an almost honey taste. It has virtually no bitterness yet despite that it is both well balanced and overwhelming in a good way. Find it and enjoy a singular beer. ketchepillar (279), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Oct 1, 2008 Aroma is quite good; very full, quite a bit of alcohol; crystal & caramel malts; toffee. The flavor starts sweet and chocolaty with lots of toffee, then morphs into a lot of coffee in the finish with some good roasted bitterness. Liqueur like alcohol. Some sips it feels just too over the top and some sips it’s wonderful. Very rich, yet the high ABV keeps the palate thin. Very chocolaty, lots of coffee. crowderm (182), St. Paul, Minnesota, USA Oct 1, 2008 Deep black pour, no head. The aroma is licorice, coffee, chocolate and booze. Lots of chocolate and coffee in the flavor, a bit of licorice, salt, caramel, and alcohol. Nice thick mouthfeel with a bit of alcohol warmth. Quite good, but a little too much of everything. Not a huge fan of the salty bitterness either. hillfiiiiire (211), Atoka, Tennessee, USA Oct 1, 2008 Pours pitch black with no head whatsoever. Aroma is alcohol with chocolate and coffee coming out if you swish the beer around for a bit. Flavor is a little tart with licorice and coffee coming through most heavily. The finish has quite an alcoholic burn to it. Medium bodied as well with a hint of warming to it. Not too impressed.
