Finally……! Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written. The high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a perfect and complex beer – in the heavyweight category.

Nearing black with a medium brown head. Aroma is sweet with burnt malt, licorice and alcohol. Flavor is quite vinous and sweet with burni malt, chocolate, vanilla and anise. Finishes bitter and dry. Good stuff.

Tap @ Three Floyds: Who goes to Three Floyds then drinks Mikkeller on tap? This guy. Excited to see this one on draft, though. Appropriately named; jet black, no transparency with a lovely, lasting, foamy tan head. Lots of roasted malts in the aroma with a small hint of milky, lactose sweetness. Burnt brown sugar, molasses, mild ashiness, a touch of brash, leafy hops towards the back-end. Nice aromatic balance of roast & sweet. Taste exhibits the same qualities... Mellow sweetness but never overdone. Baker’s chocolate, dense brown sugar, burnt toffee candy, caramel cookies... The backside plays more of a balance with notes of roasted malt, faint charred smoke, & moderate earthiness coming into play. Dark cocoa & sweet cream linger on the palate; voluptuous, relatively creamy body. A damn good stout from Mikkeller.

UPDATED: AUG 18, 2014 Black. Small beige head and lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, pine and juniper, with a hint of green pears and vegetables. Similar taste, balanced with bitternerss. Very strong, black coffe, some sourness and decent bitterness in aftertaste, for some reason also with a hint of green pears and chili. Low drinkability.

UPDATED: AUG 11, 2014 375 ml bottle from Õllepood nr 1 Gambrinus in Tartu (€ 7,90), August 2014. A cool label, for some reason without any indication to the beer’s name - I guess they think the label is telling enough. Pours dark brown, whereas in the glass it’s absolute blackness. Tan, thick, slowly receding head leaves traces. Looks all-around appetizing when poured out in a big wine glass. A mind-numbing myriad of aromas: dark coffee and chocolate, caramel, sweet, boozy, thick, vanilla, warming, brandy, coffee liqueur... Taste is as intense: very sweet, even sugary and syrupy, vanilla, some hop bitterness there too, even mild sourness. Thick body with a sticky, syrupy palate, medium / perfect carbonation. Finish is alcoholic, dry and roasty, yet syrupy. Overall a very sweet Imperial with a strong boozy kick. A thoroughly enjoyable brew for pitch black nights together with some quality literature (perhaps Dostoyevsky’s ’Notes from Underground’).

Bottle shared from a friend. Pours a jet black with a medium mocca head. Aromas of burned coffee, wood, booze, sweet dark fruits, grassy hops, dark chocolate. Taste is quite sweet up front, burned wood and coffee takes over, quite hoppy finish with a dry burned feel to it aswell.
