Finally……! Black Hole is what Mikkeller is all about. Daring, vulgar and extreme. From the very beginning Mikkellers goal has been to push the limit and with this warming, intense imperial stout, a new chapter in the Danish beer history has been written. The high bitterness from the hops and the sweetness from the malt and alcohol, creates a good balance which makes Black Hole an explosion of nuances, but also leaves a feeling of a perfect and complex beer – in the heavyweight category.

Bottle into snifter. Pours viscous, opaque black, with no real head at all. Nose is roasty, big cocoa, with a sweetly vinous quality that comes through as rich sweet dark fruits and some alcohol, bit of tar. Bit nutty even. This is not your run of the mill RIS nose. But good - intriguing. Taste is big and sweet - vinous, sour even. I think this one is a bit off. Nonethless, you still get a peek at the beer underneath - rich, some cocoa and espresso peeking through. But the odd lactic sourness - well, that doesn’t seem like it’s supposed to be there. Lots of berry flavors. Finish is vinous, bitter, lots of sickly sweet dark berry, sour. Mouthfeel is thick and viscous. This one’s like oil sliding down. Could have used a notch more carbonation, but the huge body makes it just fine as it is - if only it tasted right. Drinkability I can’t even comment on. I finished maybe half of the 375 ml bottle.

Kraftig stout med hel del kaffe, chocklad och kakao. Viss sötma men inte för övertagande.

Impressive looking, black and brilliant, with a generous but not excessive head, coffee au lait color. Deep, intense and lingering aromas to several versions of coffee -raw, roasted, espresso-, roasted and burnt malts, and an alcohol backbone. Overwhelming taste, underlining the nose notes and adding another ones to liquorice, liquor and black bitter chocolate. The overall is a huge beer, a perfect imperial Stout, perfectly ensembled, balanced and finished. Very difficult to improve.

Dark brown/black color; Medium to heavy slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate, & some black licorice; Flavor of roasted sweet malt, caramel, coffee/espresso, dark chocolate, hops, some soy sauce, and licorice; Finish is somewhat smoky & fairly bitter; Wasn’t too impressed at first - but it grew on me.

Tap at Uiltje bar. Coffee, lots of roasted nuts, lots of red berries, some ash. Medium sweet with light tartness and coffee bitter finish. Nice hops throughout but the specific hop aromas get a bit lost. Medium to full bodied with slight thin feel. Nice.

Draught at BeerTemple. Very dark brown with almost no head. Full body with low carbonation. Quite sweet with some bitter tones in its finish. Roasted malts, coffee, caramel, dark chocolate, warming alcohol and some spices. A great full flavoured experience.

Bottle, vintage 2011, enjoyed 3 years after bottling. Pours pitch black, with an enormous creamy mocha head. Aroma is big, complex and amazing, with burned malts, coffee and muscovado, as well as cocoa, leather, wood, tannins and Quite sweet, but with astringent burned notes. Creamy, velvety body, with soft carbonation. Flavour is sweet with roasted malts, vanilla and tobacco, as well as muscovado, honey and cocoa. Sweet coffee astringency in the finish.

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2015 What a fantastic beer this is! The Black Hole really acts like a black hole dedicated to absorb every bit of you soul. Super hoppy on the nose, a big smell of cut grass exploded during pouring. Then came the chocolate and a big amount of roasted malts. The mouthfeel is really interresting because of this fine acidity that balances the alcohol very well. Not too sweet, well balanced, rich but not heavy, medium to big body, this one is a sure bet for any fan of big stouts!

Aroma: coffee, chocolate, milk, chilli, spice, alcohol, cherry, red fruit; Appearance: dark brown, vanishing brown head; Taste: intense bitterness, intense sweetness, medium sourness; Palate: light body, slick texture, soft carbonation, bitter finish Nice roast, lacks body, alcoholic warmth is prominent. Very sweet and spicy at the same time. Lighter version of Black. Paradoxally drinkable.
