COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
English: It is a real "man’s beer" with lots of tar, smoke, burnt malt – aged in scotch whisky barrels. It has quite a bit of smoked and roasted malts, honey is just 3%.

(Sample Date: 3/19/2011 Source:Other) Fruity plum prune tobacco notes with lots of dark and roasted malt aromas. Black with fine tan head. Big fruity dark fruit flavor with lots a burnt sugar and creosote notes. Medium to light body and mouthfeel. Finish is quite dry and fairly bitter and astringent.

Huge black pour dense coccoa brown head with some nice lacing. Tons of roast malts some raisen and syrup a hint of smoke. Huge we’ll coated palate. Flavor leads with some light smoked meat a hint of dry oak in the finish a touch of booze in a warm swallow a fair amount of bitterness and a bit of piney hops. Enjoyed this but at $17 for a bottle its quite overpriced.

I didn’t know this beer was retired; they have plenty of it at Royal Wine & Spirits. Either way, I’m glad to be trying it while I can. Aroma is very complex: scotch/whiskey, peat, honey, oak and plenty of roast. I am also picking up some red wine and a less pleasant vinegar scent. The latter is the only thing that takes away from an otherwise perfect aroma. The appearance is flawless. Pitch black with a very small amount of dark brown foam that dissipates right away. I love it when a stout has a dark head rather than tan or off white. Tastes like peat, smoke, honey, roast and some bitterness at the end. Very involved, definitely a sipper. Trademark Mikkeller palate, overall one of the more interesting beers I have tried.

"black with cocoa head. charred aroma with a touch of chocolate and some coffee. roasted malt. full bodied but not thick. more complex than the scotch barreled black hole, and not as dominated by smoky peet, though that is still the biggest player. the honey is a minor player that comes through in the finish. warming with a lasting finish. tasty, but still pretty harsh - a whole bottle might be a chore."

Bottle. Black in color with a creamy tan head. Chocolate, vanilla, smoke and lighter notes of tar in aroma. Smokey cocoa and vanilla at first in taste. Nice mouthfeel. Later on some whiskey and more of that campfire smokyness mixed with salty licorice appears. Butterscotch sweetness in the end as well.

Appearance: Pours an inky black/brown with tan head. Aroma: Honey, smoky malt, treacle, spiritous, peat, earthy. Taste: Medium bitterness, low/medium sweetness and sourness. Palate: Thick smooth texture with a slight graininess, medium body, average carbonation, lingering dry, bitter sour charcoal like, malty, spiritous finish with alcohol warmth after the initial smoky, honey sweetness. Comments: Very good. Rating is for bottled version batch number 427 brewed 18.05.09 and best before 18.05.14.

Bottle batch 427, consumed on bbf date. Pours thick and black with a small dark brown diminishing head. Lots of honey in the nose with some whisky in the back. Flavor also has lots of honey, whisky, oak, light charcoal. Close to full body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, medium sweet and bitter. Long dry finish with honey. I like this much.

Fantastic beer. Black as heck, burnt, bitter, sour, salt, ashy, brown sugar, tar and whiskey. Like a beer vegemite (what came first, chicken or the egg?). I loved it.

(Bottle) Black colour with lasting, frothy, brown head. Malty, roasted nose with honey, oak wood, sweet espresso, tar, liquorice, roasted malt and cacao. Malty, roasted taste with notes of strong sweet black coffee, liquorice, tar, burnt sugar, cacao, honey, oak wood and a finish with a generous roasty coffee bitterness. Full body with a smooth and rounded mouthfeel. A certain sweetness. Honey aromas dominate the initial nose, then tar, oak and coffee takes over in the taste. Possibly not the most balanced of beers, but quite tasty. Very nice.
