In Mikkeller we have over the years done many collaboration brews. However, the last one we did was a little unusual – we collaborated with the Swedish tattoo studio Crooked Moon. The two brothers Jacob and Jonas Pedersen that run Crooked Moon Tattoo in Helsingborg wanted to celebrate their tattoo studio’s first birthday with a big party, and what could be more natural than to do it with a beer in their own name? The two brothers have designed the labels for this beer. And therefore this beer comes with two different labels. One by of Jacob, and the other by Jonas. The beer is just like a Crooked Moon tattoo: strong and powerful. In this case we are talking about a violently hoppy double IPA with 9% alcohol. You’ll find Crooked Moon / Mikkeller DIPA find on draft and bottled. The picture show the two labels – Jacob’s label design to the left and of course then, Jonas’ to the right.En dobbelt india pale ale.

Brightcloudy orange gold with a big creamy white head. Lovely lacing in the glass. Citrus orange aroma, bready malt and some lush pungent hops. Huge flavour, hops dominate, more orange, sharp orange zest with a lush malty backbone. Mouthfeel is robust and slick, oily hops line the palette. Carbonation is tight but not flat. Finish lasts for a long time. Insanely hoppy and very enjoyable.

330 ml bottle from Gallagher’s Beer World/El Irlandés. Pours a nice, cloudy orange color with a massive frothy white head that diminishes slowly and laces amazingly well. Aroma is strong, intensely hoppy and fruity, lush, fresh and clears your air for breathing. Fresh notes of grapefruit, peaches, oranges, pommegranate, lemongrass, a bit of resin (Simcoe hops?), watermelon and prickly pear. Loads of citrusy touches too. Very clean, bright, characterful and aromatic. Taste is crisp, loaded with fruity flavors and fine semi-bitterness. A mellow fruity sweetness allows it to achieve a great balance. Notes of orange, mellon, grapefruit and peach nectar. Hints of citrus. Finish is slightly boozy and it’s the first time you feel the high alcohol content. Medium body, medium carbonation. The high alcohol noticeable in the finish turns this into something close to a Barley Wine just during the last few seconds. Slightly confusing between extremely fresh character and alcoholic finish. If it were just 6% ABV it would be a world-class IPA. But it’s still a very fine IIPA as is.

Sample at the Far Out! Space Tasting #2 on 10/01/2015. Cloudy orange color with a medium foamy white head that recedes gradually to a film. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of tropical fruit, hops and malt. Medium to full body with flavors of citrusy hops, mango and biscuit malt. The finish is moderately bitter with a fruity hops aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Appearance: hazy pale amber with one finger of rocky ivory head, good retention and moderate patchy lacing. (4/5) Aroma: pithy citrus, melon, vinous, stone fruit, floral. (8/10) Taste: moderate sweet, moderately strong bitter, mild tart. (8/10) Medium slightly oily body, moderate carbonation, lingering slightly boozy bitter finish. (4/5) A DIPA named after a tattoo parlour? Yeah, OK, sure, why not? Decent complexity with a nice hop/malt balance. (Yeah, I see you there, Nelson Sauvin, don’t think I didn’t.) And it’s a sneaky bugger - the 9% ABV doesn’t really make its presence know until you’re well through the bottle and the room gets a little wobbly. I like this. (16/20)
