COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium.

’Fad bamse’ is a highly hopped and dry hopped imperial pilsner with a light body and lovely crispyness from the lager yeast.
A Danish pilsner is typically characterized by an alcohol content of 4,6% vol., piss-yellow colour and a sexless, slightly bitter taste. But it doesn’t have to be like this…! Draft Bear is Mikkellers interpretation of a ’pilsner’, heavyweight-style. With its powerful hop notes, high alcohol content and lovely golden appearance, the only reference to the pilsner style is the clean taste of the lager yeast.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils, carapils and amber), light candy sugar, hops (amarillo and cascade) and lager yeast.

Smells fruity with some pine and citrus notes. A slightly cloudy orange amber with a mostly diminishing off-white head and minimal lacing. The taste has a slight sweetness with hints of orange, grain, and a hoppy pine like finish. Medium-light bodied with lively carbonation. Overall, a very satisfying beer. Would be a great hot Texas summer afternoon beer.

Pours slightly hazy pale amber with two fingers of light tan head diminishing gradually to a thin skim, minimal patchy lacing. (3/5) Nose is tropical fruit, citrus, caramel malt, grass and hay. (8/10) Taste is moderate sweet, strong bitter. (8/10) Medium body, moderate to low carbonation. (4/5) So Mikkeller, unsatisfied with making the world’s best coffee stout and pale lager, has to challenge To Øl for the best pilsner? Using my Achilles heels, massive doses of starts-with-C hops and a high ABV? Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate those things - but still think the To Øl Raid is a better beer despite its much lower ABV. I guess I could call this the best IMPERIAL pilsner I’ve ever had, though. Now stop fighting, you’re making the kids cry. (15/20)

Clear amber, orange glowing color, with a big, froth head. Has fantastic aromas, which are established between a well made Pils and a tropical IPA, while getting balanced with strawy, biscuity malts. A crisp fruitiness ranges from lemon peel and grapefruit to tart kiwi. Tastes very hoppy, while not being intensly bitter, with grass and hints of herbs, accompanied by orange and papaya. Malts are well integrated, pushing the taste into a sweeter direction. The malt sweetness then gets damped by a wheaty, dry finish, in which the metallic carbonation shines. The dry finish remains interesting, due to tropical fruits, playing a convincing counterpart to the typical pils-like lager finish.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet’s BU. Amber with an above medium amount of white, foamy head. Very hoppy nose. Some grapefruit, lemon, other citrus and some alcohol. Quite bitter, but some sweetness helps to balance it out. Quite thick and oily body. Low to medium carbonation. A bit dry. Lemon, orange and other grapefruit flavours. Also some sugar, resin. Hint of banana, pepper and other spices. Very good!

330 ml bottle from Mikeller Webshop.
Dark golden, clear body, with a big, frothy, dense head, that laces a lot.
Aroma of passion fruit and other fruits, grass, hay, some herbs, candy, some alcohol.
Taste with a lot of grass, citrus, pine, some tropical fruits, herbs, honey, alcohol.
Mouthfeel is medium, quite oily, with a lively carbonation and it finishes bitter, dry, with pine, lemon zest, a lot of grass again and slightly alcohol warming.

Nice. Pretty intense, not only because of the noticeable alcohol, but also because of quite dominant grassy notes and a strong bitter, dry finish. Good drinkability though. Some nice tropical fruits and sweet candy notes for a good balance. Overall enjoyable, but not my favourite beer of this style.

Tap at Kaapse Brouwers. Slight hazy dark golden with medium white head. Lots is sweet malts with a roasted touch and some cocoa powder. Big piny hops with dry biscuits and bitter marmalade. Some plums and dried apricots. Medium to full bodied. Wow, this is really complex and deep, I get new things with every sip. Love it.

On tap at Dutch’s. Hazy golden orange color. Thin white head, leaving great thicker lace. Medium to bigger body, good full feel. Pretty creamy overall, whole feel and appearance has a sort of nitro-aspect to it (but it’s not pouring nitro). Smooth, creamy lighter carbonation. Light slick body, lightly dry in the finish. Great big bready doughy malt. Kind of crackery, kind of cake-like. Mild peppery, some decent piney hop but not as hoppy as expected judging from the description.. The American way of doing "hoppy imperial pils" is to just brew a DIPA with lager yeast it seems, but this respects the pilsner base, much more creative and thought out, I respect that. The hop doesn’t dominate the aroma, but provides for a pleasant moderate to bigger bitterness. Light to moderate sweet. Very balanced taste. Pretty fun stuff.
