3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
From bottle, thanks to Gordon. It pours jet black with a small tan head. The nose is rich, roasty, rubbing alcohol, coffee, toast, dark chocolate, vanilla, toffee and molasses. The taste is boozy, rich roasted malt, alcohol, toffee, molasses, chocolate, sake-like notes, dark fruits, coconut and vanilla with a dry, hot finish. Full body, fine carbonation and viscous mouth-feel. Far too much alcohol presence for my liking, but fun to try anyhow.

Bottle from Mikkeller Shop; pitch black pour with tiny brown head, big boozy aroma, initial taste is big alcohol but this then reveals real complexity vanilla, expresso coffee, chocolate quite sweet, quite thick and viscous but not cloying, this is an epically big stout.

Thanks to BoBoChamp for sharing this beer. It was interesting to try one of the special festival releases. Getting one home was out of the question as was trying to drink a magnum alone. Based on this sample I will have to keep my eyes open for chances to sample the rest. I’m sure they will be around for at least a bit longer based on the stores in Belgium.
Aroma / Appearance - The oily flat base is black and sticky like warm tar. Long legs crawl up and down as you’d expect from a 20% barrel aged imperial stout. Whiskey is evident though not overpowering. The impact of the Eagle Rare in particular is virtually invisible. Coffee, black truffles, and anise round out a heavy and boozy profile.
Flavor / Palate - The general aspects of bourbon influence combine with the vanilla, anise, and coffee to smooth out the rough edges of standard Black. Maybe it was the particular barrels but they work well to create a chewy impression that does not feel like a 20% malt bomb until you’ve had a few sips. It might not be the greatest Danish imperial stout but everyone should give it a try once.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
150cl bottle. Big thx BoBoChamp!
APPEARANCE: pitch black beer, no foam.
NOSE: whiskey flavor apparently from the multiple ’Eagle Rare’ barrel aging, based on the Black 2011. The flavor spreads very fast, even when just opening the bottle!
TASTE: very boozy, burns the throat! and it lasts! You almost exhale alcohol back out. For me, this is overruling, alcohol warming to the max.
Nice experiment, but little less alcohol would have been nice...

4/VI/13 - 150cl bottle @ De Hopduvel - BB: 1/III/2062 - bottle# 045/170 (2013-527) Thanks to Bobochamp for sharing the bottle!
Little cloudy dark brown beer, small beige head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: vanilla, lots of chocolate, mocha, hint of coffee, sweet bourbon, caramel. MF: soft carbon, full body, thick creamy texture. Taste: pretty sweet first, alcohol, lots of chocolate, bitter hops coming on to the scene, vanilla, sugar. Aftertaste: bitter, some citrus, bourbon, caramel, vanilla, alcohol, sweet, very dry and bitter ending. Powerful hop fireworks after all the sugar violence.
