(forêt tasting - six of them) pours hazy medium dark golden orange with a small cap, legs are sticky. candi sugar and candy floss, soft and creamy caramel, booze, slightly stronger woodsy notes than light toasted, as expected, bit of coconut, oaky vanilla, grass, nice fruitiness - berries and apples again. low carbonation, medium body - oily and sticky, very silky, sweetness kept under control which is appreciable, bold grassy-spicy-peppery, lightly tannic and brandy-like burning finish - then again, maybe i’m tired of the past five others from the series like my buddies. if i may conclude here for the whole set: the underlying barleywine is well executed - warming and not necessarily cloying. also, they are some differences between barrels (and between different toastings). nice barrel treatment for each of them though.

Bottle 375ml. Pours golden with almost no head. Aroma is of porto, alcohol, caramel. Taste is of caramel, alcohol, porto. Palate: Full bodied. Sticky mouthfeel. Overall: Pretty good. Boozy. Balance not too shabby considering the beast this beer is.

Pours a dark golden and is covered by a light veil of foam that leaves some light lacing. Aroma is full of alcohol, in fact I couldn’t feel anything else (tired from the 5 others?). Taste is woody and really sweet. Body was medium, mouthfeel less syrupy than the others. So much residual sugars!

Bottle (375 ml). Clear golden/orange with a light ring of white foam that is quickly disappearing and minimal lacing. Aroma is more malty than boozy (though it’s still really boozy) with a lots of wood and dried fruits. Taste is boozy and malty along with wood, dried fruits and caramel. Warming/burning finish. Full bodied. Low carbonation. Sirupy mouthfeel. Nothing much to say that I haven’t said in the ratings of the 5 others from the series except that I’m glad it’s the last one. It was probably my favorite (by a slight margin though, they were all really similar) along Forêt du Centre Medium. Decent sipper, but not one that you buy more than once.

(Rating #5359)

Clear golden colour, white head. Slightly lighter gold than the other Forêt Limousine beer. Malty aroma, orange, fruity and alcohol. Flavour of marmelade, alcohol, wood. Quite sweet. Finish wood, wine and alcohol. Can’t determine any difference between the degree of toast of the barrel, or even between these two Forêt Limousine beers (aside from a small colour difference. After tasting 5 different beers from this series, I can say the influence of the toasting of the barrel seems to be minimal on this beer. Wondering if it would have been different if they used a bit lighter beer, I don’t quite understand why they chose to do this barrel toast experiment with such hefty beers, instead of taking a, let’s say, bit more blank canvas. Nonetheless, they are nice and interesting barley wines.
(From 37.5cL bottle @ ZZT VIIIb, Oirschot 2013. Thanks for sharing, Benzai, DutchDrebus and Ansjelaah -no idea who brought which one-)

Pours a hazy orange with a low white head. Aroma is quite sweet with candied apples, honey, maple syrup, resin, pine, some esters. Taste is very sweet: honey, maple syrup, pineapple, candied apples. Also some faint toasted oak tones with pine and resin. Mouthfeel is quite oily and sticky, yet not unpleasantly so.

Bottle tasted alongside the other 5 at Beergeek. Slightly less tasty than its light oak counterpart. It’s strange rating 6 extremely siilar beers alongside one another. I wonder if having them out of context, independant of each other would enhance the individual experiences attached to each. It was another extremely interesting, woody, bubblegum sweet barley wine. I liked all the competitiors and particularly enjoyed the event.

@ Beer Temple tasting. Poured deep golden with a small ring. Aroma of heavy wood, alcohol soaked fruit. Full, smooth body, flavour is sweet dark fruit with a dry, sweet finish.
