This Bock from Mikkeller is called Frelser. Means Savior in Danish. The name is a subtle reference to all Bocks Mother: Salvator. Originally the monks brewed Salvator because they needed a very strong and rich beer during Lent. Do not drink this beer instead of a meal, it contains 11% alcohol.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some very good lacing. Aroma of caramel malt with notes of warming alcohol and light caramel notes. Taste is also a nice enough mix between some caramel malt with light fruity ester. Body is about average with good carbonation and some alcohol was apparent. OK but still quite different from some staple of the style – lacking some ester that I usually associate with the style.

Draught @ Pikkulintu. Dark brown, slightly translucent with a medium-sized tan head. Sweetish malty scent with impressions of chocolate and coffee. Medium-bodied and averagely carbonated. Flavour comprises roasted malt, coffee, caramel and dark fruits and spices along with hoppy bitterness. A delightful beer: I received my Saviour with joy.

This beer is awesome. It pours black with a nice tan froth that lingers for quite a while. Nose is cocoa, and a touch of hops. On the palate the cocoa is front and center for me. Great hop backbone gives a good balance between hops and malt.

It’s black with a red hue and a huge, light-brown, creamy and lasting head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt and dark fruits. The flavour is very sweet but is nicely balanced by hops. It has notes of caramel, malt, grapefruit, fruit, dried dark fruits, alcohol and the finish is dry and slightly bitter.
