This Bock from Mikkeller is called Frelser. Means Savior in Danish. The name is a subtle reference to all Bocks Mother: Salvator. Originally the monks brewed Salvator because they needed a very strong and rich beer during Lent. Do not drink this beer instead of a meal, it contains 11% alcohol.

pour is near black with a big ol head of grey that lasts. doubt i’ll get through this tonight. been going for 17 hours and i can see the end of the line. at least i’ll a have a breakfast beer. this is not a beer, it is a syrup, thick goodness. smells of roast, maple, a bit of smoke(could be the 4 mile fire, but i think it is the beer.) and watermelon. damn this is tasty. nice roast and sweet balance. caramel notes all over without being too sweet. some vanilla and a great warming alcohol throughout. peanut finish that has a lot of a lot of honey flavors, like a candy i used to love as a kid. bit-o-honey in beer form. good times.

Pours ebony into a stem glass. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes leaving spider lacing to coat surface. Dusty tangerine aromas. Sweet milk chocolate covered summer fruits upfront continuing to a lasting choco alcohol burn finish.

Huge dense beige head, quite stable, over cola-coloured beer. Very rich alcoholic nose, with cake, parsley and lots of dark malts However, less "clean" than bottom fermenting usually yields. Dry, bitterish, near severe main taste, notwithstanding a subtle, but very real sweet-malty presence in the background. Alcohol, bread, and a spiciness remindful of colaflavour, but without any syrupy sweetness. And above all, an impressive balance. Medium to well-bodied, and very slick. Discreet (certainly for its ABV) alcoholwarming, only gradually increasing. If anything, the balance of this beer impresses me.

My Bottom Line:
This Imperial Stout-meets-Doppelbock proposes Munich and chocolate malts along raisiny caramel, while alcohol heat and herbal hop bitterness seal each sip with authority.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam tops the brown-hinged blackness.
-Even though this is a mighty brew, it is not too sweet (which I appreciate).
-The soft effervescence makes each rather easy drinking for an 11% lager.
-This is as well executed as any other Mikkeller brew, but the recipe itself is not as compelling as some of his best work.

Blood red/black pour. Aroma has a lot of herbs and a bit smokey notes. Taste is rich with liqorice and coffee liqueur. Nice full body.

Pours dark brown with red at the edges and a creamy tan head. Aromas of caramel, brown sugar, some dark fruit, and booze. Flavor is lots of sweet malt, fruit, some roasty notes, and a good bit of bitterness.

Big thanks to Blazer06 for another Mikkeller treat. Pours murky rutty mahogany with mocha head. The aroma puts out spicy black licorice, black strap molasses, a bit of roast, a mild amount of dark fruity esters and a wafer thin ring of sweet nuttiness rounded things out. The taste is smooth to start with a pulse of chocolate and sweet malts to go along with growing rich sweet dark fruity esters. By midway a black licorice note, some spiciness and chocolate all join in to take this to the finish. Yummy beer that goes above and beyond most of this style I’ve had before.
