This Bock from Mikkeller is called Frelser. Means Savior in Danish. The name is a subtle reference to all Bocks Mother: Salvator. Originally the monks brewed Salvator because they needed a very strong and rich beer during Lent. Do not drink this beer instead of a meal, it contains 11% alcohol.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Poured a deep black with a thin beige head. Nose is malty, roasted malty. First sip, wow! A flavor explosion. Lots of sweetness, and roasted malts. Dark fruits, rasberry. A bit sweet overall, with quite a bit of warmth. Nicely flavored and very drinkable, especially after a few others. A better closer than opener.

Draught at Blind Tiger. Very dark brown, basically black, with nice medium off white head. Aroma is raisin/dark dried fruit, artificial purple (not bad), big sweet malt backbone that hints at chocolate. Taste is sweet boozy dried fruit, light chocolate, somethings off though. Too boozy sweet for me, good though. Better warm.

750ml Bottle. Dark coppery red pour with a creamy beige head that diminishes to surface cover fairly quickly. Aroma is rich, malty and sweet, with notes of toffee, raisins, brown sugar, dark rum and spicy, fruity hops. Flavour is similar to the aroma, sweet and bitter, malty and fruity. Sticky, creamy, mouthfeel with fairly low carbonation and a long finish that starts sweet, becoming more bitter. An excellent doppelbock that is not only great for regular drinking but also qualifies as something special. Really good, hope to see Mikkeller try more brews in a similar style.
