This Bock from Mikkeller is called Frelser. Means Savior in Danish. The name is a subtle reference to all Bocks Mother: Salvator. Originally the monks brewed Salvator because they needed a very strong and rich beer during Lent. Do not drink this beer instead of a meal, it contains 11% alcohol.

Draft during CBC Chicago. Pours a clear dark rich mahogany with a frothy light tan head. Nutty aroma, vinous, rich, bit of toast, old ale, nutty. Flavor is same but more hoppy, nutty, more chocolate and roast, touch of something tart, especially in the finish, a bit of that palsticy yeast and pine character, hides the alcohol beautifully, cherry notes. Medium bodied, fluffy carbonation, not sticky, drinks very well.

Sampled on 10/8/2010. This dopple/triple bock pours a dark brown color from a 750ml corked and caged bottle. Small to medium sized white foamy head with nice retention and good lacing. Aroma is malty, bready and sweet, touches of brown sugar and raisins. A medium to full bodied dopplebock. The malts are caramel, bready, hints of chocolate and cookie. The hops are earthy. Nice carbonation. A touch of alcohol bite, but not bad for 11%. Very nice sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

750 ml "champagne" bottle, kindly shared by my beerpal Christian. ABV is 11%. "Triple Bock" with Hallertauer and Horizon hops. Very dark ruby colour, nearly black. Big to moderate beige head. Oaky aroma, notes of dark dried fruits, vinous notes. Oaky flavour, much the same elements as the aroma, but not too sweet. Distinct hoppy bitterness in the finish.

A very, very dark bock - think Celebrator- that produces a fine, sticky beige head. Explosive munich character in the nose feels like whole-grain bread, milk chocolate and roasted nuts. Dates and prunes fruitiness remain in the background. Fusel touches get kinda plasticy. It gets very alcoholic as it warms, initially containing its 11% impressively well, but heating up, becoming more insistent. Its saving grace has got to be its relatively balanced sweetness-dryness ratio. It is very sweet indeed, but far from the levels of its peers - Samichlaus and its descendants. The finish is mostly about alcohol, lingeringly so and the shy leafy hops remain a non factor. I reckon this is pretty well done and actually almost top of its slim class of very strong dark lagers, but it does not have much of what I look for in a beer: an enveloping freshness, feeling the ingredients, focus-or-complexity, etc.

Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some very good lacing. Aroma of caramel malt with notes of warming alcohol and light caramel notes. Taste is also a nice enough mix between some caramel malt with light fruity ester. Body is about average with good carbonation and some alcohol was apparent. OK but still quite different from some staple of the style – lacking some ester that I usually associate with the style.

Draught @ Pikkulintu. Dark brown, slightly translucent with a medium-sized tan head. Sweetish malty scent with impressions of chocolate and coffee. Medium-bodied and averagely carbonated. Flavour comprises roasted malt, coffee, caramel and dark fruits and spices along with hoppy bitterness. A delightful beer: I received my Saviour with joy.
