Pours deep murky amber into a tulip. Off-white bubbly head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Band-aid and oak aromas. Sweet band-aid upfront turning to aspirin and caramel before the slightly sour grape and oak finish.

A steady pour into my New Belgium globe glass produces a one-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a rich amber hue that shows a brilliantly clear, almost orange tinged, copper color. The aroma is quite vinous and fruity smelling; bright sweet grapes, tropical fruit notes, and perhaps even a hint of citrus is backed by spicy, astringent oak, perhaps even a touch of grassy oak character, some savory pale malt notes (malted cracker).

This has a light sweetness to it which accentuates the fruit character; notes of Muscat, floral tropical fruit, Chardonnay raisins, guava, and perhaps some melon are balanced out by some spicy, woody, slightly astringent, tongue coating oak character. The body of this brew has some definite heft to it, but it is actually on the light side for a beer of this strength. This is nicely balanced between the fruit character, the oak, the light malt, and the light yeast character. The latter contributes a yeasty, not quite savory bite in the finish, esetery, somewhat phenolic, light notes of medicinal / plastic character, and fruit accentuating notes. Faint notes of cheese, and earthy character that is muted, but accentuating, spicy notes of pepper, perhaps a touch of bell pepper, spicy alcohol, buttery oak becomes more noticeable as the beer warms up. Perhaps a touch of tartness (from the barrel ageing maybe), accentuates the bright fruit character just enough. Rounded malt notes provide a touch of savory character.

This is one of those brews meant to be sipped, the more I sit with it the more it grows on me, and it wasn’t that bad to begin with (in fact it was quite good), thoroughtly satisfying in the end.

Bottle from The Davis Beer Shoppe. Pours clear dark copper with a bubbly/foamy beige head. Aroma is earthy/oaky. Med body or so. Flavor is sour, earthy, woody. I’d agree there’s chardonnay. One of my least favorite wines. Nice wild ale. The wood is quite nice. Mikkeller goes a little off the road much of the time, but this is excellent.
