4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
A Mes rate. Bottle shared with Grant, J and Scott, chin chin guys.
Damn this is bloody brilliant. Itís so close to Orval but I donít want to do it the injustice of that comparisson. Beautiful orange red amber with a supurb off white head and lace. Amazing snowstorm when swilled. Simply sublime yeast on the nose, glorious citrus (mainly orange) but the hops, my god the hops. Big tropical notes, is this NS? The flavour is equally brilliant. The body is superb, it sits just right on the palate and the flavour delivery is quite exceptional. There is sooooo much going on here. Lime, liquorice, so much fruit of many different varieties, and a stunning malt base. The brett is just an undercurrent. I really wish there was more of it but itís obviously just starting to sing. It gives it an amazing dryness and balances everything out perfectly. Give this some time to age and Iím sure it would be even better. As it is, itís amazing, just amazing. This as much as anything Iíve had from Mikkeller proves what magnificent brewers they are. Iím guessing this was not particularly easy to make and it would be so easy to make a total mess off. Itís fucking excellent. Sorry but it is. I love Mikkeller.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Corked 750ml bottle. BB 16/12/14
Served at 13 degrees (Yeah, I had a temperature probe handy!) in a goblet.
Creamy white head that clings lazily to the glass, atop a lightly hazy copper body.
Bitter orange hopiness on the nose, biscuity malt sweetness, touch of earthy spice and sharp citrus-like yeasty twang.
Suprisingly lean body for the strength, moderate yet racy carbonation, light creaminess about the texture that dries suggesting a well attenuated body and a slight warmth alludes to the big underlying abv without being overt.
It opens out far more on the body, complex with the slightest bit of funk; pepper, orange, vanilla, biscuity malt, lemon meringue, grass, cinammon, peach, ginger. As the flavour lingers notes of sour mash grains, grapefruit, hay and salty sweat seem to appear, though iíd say you have to be looking for it, otherwise it just comes across as an íodd aftertasteí. Finish is relatively low bitterness, dry, and the alcohol could very easily escape detection...if I could stand up properly!
Quite enjoyed this one. Very reminisant of Orval at times. Maybe not as complexly orange-peel-like and horsey as the last Orval I had, but thereís comparisons in the flavour, and oddly the body, which is quite remarkable considering this is a beast of a much more robust nature. Either way, iíd be tempted to put one of these away just to see if any underlying rogue yeast creates some extra funk and jive, which would really lift this beer into another dimension!
