4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pitch black with a dark brown head that isn’t long lasting.
Aroma: clear calvados, dark chocolate, licorice.
Taste: dark chocolate + pralines + liqueur, calvados and apples, licorice, not sour but the finish is tongue-puckering.
Wow, this may be even better than Cognac, very well balanced and tasty.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle to glass. Pours a deep black with a thin ring of a dark brown head. Aroma is full of roasted burnt malts, chocolate, light coffee, and some dessert wine. Flavor is quite potent, with a burnt bitterness and chocolatey sweetness, both of which linger in the finish. Full body with a very light carbonation. Astringent, but delicious.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
250 ml bottle thanks to WillRunForBeer! Pours pitch black with a small creamy head that fades to a ring. Aromas are dark chocolate, chocolate cake, burnt wood, coffee, and a hint of brandy. Taste is dominated up front by salty, dark chocolate. Yum. Finish is very complex and changes as it warms. At different times I get caramel, toffee, coffee, burnt wood, ash, calvados, and dark fruit. Medium to thick body, very creamy mouthfeel. Awesome stuff. Calvados becomes noticable as it warms. I need to find the other variations of this.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from bieresgourmet.be webshop. Pours a oily black body with a small caramel-hued creamy head. Nose is leather, salty licorice, dark chocolate, coffee, wood and hints of salmiac and faint Calvados. Taste is smooth licorice tones at first, then the beer takes a dip into dark chocolate and coffee before heading towards leather and salmiac. Hints of wood and leather, but the apple/brandy profile is very discreet, not to say virtually undetectable. Creamy, heavy and oily mouthfeel with a suitable soft carbonation. A very smooth big beer indeed, which doesn’t come across as particularly Calvados-ish. Just very good.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
25cl bottle at home. Pours deep brown to black with a small dark beige head. It literally sticks to the glass; thick & oily. Greenish aromas (paprica, peppers) with heavy roast ’n toast, dark sweet chocolate, espresso. Thick oily body with medium carbo, chocolate aromas. Nice, but no added value vs. the Original one.

Rating 800! Side by side with Cognac version. Thought I liked both more than the other at various times, but decided to rate this one slightly higher. Much the same core flavor as cognac one, but felt this one had slightly more complexity. Barrel did show though at a couple of points. Great.
