4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Small bottle thanks to hallinghansen. Pours a totally black hue with a medium brown head. A sweet roast and cocoa nose, a bit of sour dark fruit, smoky. The flavor is very nice and rich; slight dark fruit with sourness, ash, smoke, bacon, vanilla, cocoa, bittersweet chocolates. Pretty mellow despite the ABV. Quite enjoyable. Dry and warm.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Single bottle purchased from Kensington Wine Market in Calgary, Ab on April 11, 2011. Colour: Freaking road tar black. Dark yellow-brown medium head. Nose: Maple, olive brine, whitefish, extra bold roasted nicauraguan coffee, pickled mushrooms. Taste: Medium-light sweet, medium-heavy bitter, medium sour. Dominant BBQ’d red meat char, hot dogs, more olive brine, tobasco (without the spice). Fun and unique, as Mikkeller is known for, but a tad much.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured into snifter. Extremely black beer with little light penetration and a small but present mocha colored head. The head receded fairly quickly but left a good cap. There was minimal spotty lacing.
The aroma is a pleasant tour de force for imperial stouts. There is molasses, liquorice, espresso, chocolate, dark roasty malts, dark fruits, with a touch of alcohol. Very appealing and practically aroma therapy for me.
The taste follows suit with a fine delivery on the promises the aroma made. The flavor is very rich and a touch sweet with clear notes of roasted malts, dark fruits (fig, dates, raisins), liquorice, and coffee. There is a fine warming alcohol sensation present in the aftertaste which is shared with hops.
The mouthfeel is fairly thick and a bit sticky with a medium-body. Carbonation is quite low - appropriate for the style. Delicious beer but they have it right serving 250ml bottles. By the end the mouthfeel could get to be a bit much. Definitely would buy this again (repeatedly). Excellent example of the style and the talent at Mikkeller.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, 25cl. A black one, oily pour and with a minimal sized tan head. The aroma is like expected when Mikkeller decides to make a big, strong, black beer, burnt malts, coffee, roasted malts, soy sauce notes and hints of chocolate, caramel, alcohol and some prunes. A bit boozy flavor maybe, but really nice, with chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, dried fruits, soy sauce and of course the already mentioned alcohol. Full-bodied, warming and oily. The finish is lasting and with all the elements found in the initial flavor, some bitterness chimes in, but isn’t very evident. A big beer well suited for those small bottles, and still be shared with a good friend. 101229

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2011 Bottle at GB. Totally black as engine oil, nut dark brown thin head. Smells of chocolate, liquorice, tar and coffee. Taste is extremely smooth of caramel, liquorice, toffee, coffee and chocolate. Probably some tar too. Liquorice is quite dominant. Feel is very oily, almost as tar. Finish has enourmes bitterness from hops. Fantastic beer. Probably one of the best there is

Pungent roast and alcohol nose. Notes of licorice, burnt malts, coffee, dark chocolate, smoke, a bit of a hop. The finish has a warmth of alcohol and a bitterness that leaves a thick, dry aftertaste of robust roast. A killer taste throughout with a truly epic roast. This is the best imperial Stout around.
Fantastic!!!! The pour is pure black opaque with a dark brown tan head. Aroma is smoky and peaty with huge roasted malts and coffee. The smoke is subtle and woody with a hint of fruit and licorice. Sweet and malty middle with tons of woody roasty notes. Chocolate and coffee notes mingled well with smoky and peaty notes. A large alcohol finish and warming finish. Love this beer.
