Mikkeller’s tribute to the green gold.

UPDATED: SEP 20, 2011 At the sugarbowl - not long after the tapping of an actual Mikkeller beer - never thought this day would arrive in Alberta. Pretty much the same as the bottle but obviously fresher and being very hazy. My original bottled review stands except I’ll bump it up .1 cuz I can.

I see the RB pic and realize that somewhere this was sold in big ass bottles and all I got is this little dinky 330ml bottle. Poured out a very faintly hazy, ugly amber with a large medium tan bubbly head and random lacing. The aroma is large with solid sweetness, piles of citrus, caramel, tropical fruits, etc. Lemon, lime, peaches, rrgf, nectarines, floral notes, AIPA’s that I love dead on. Caramel, lightly powdered, Ram It Down by Judas Priest crushing my eardrums, a quick swirl brings a devastating payload of fruits and sweetness and soft pine. A truckload of citrus just slammed into my face. Peach, pine, peach, pine, other things. Nectarine, biting hoppy spice on the finish, huge bitterness that comes in waves throughout the tasting experience. The barrage of hops is excellent. My extended fart just sounded like Steven Hawking choking on french fries - meh, it’s a skill. This brew does mellow near the bottom which in itself would be a satisfying liquid. Wonderful carbonation and piles of bitterness held in check on occasion by the overall sweetness. Eggcelent.

Sehr gut gelungen.Test vom 16.1.2010, Gebinde: Glasflasche

Bottle. Moderate malt and hop aromas of roasted andcaramel, pine and a bit of citrus peel, light soap for the yeast, with a hint of date in the background. Head is average size, frothy/fizzy, light beige with good but slippery lacing and is mostly lasting. Color is murky, medium orange/red. flavor starts slightly sweet and moderately acidci, then finishes moderately acidic and heavily bitter. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, oily with a lively carbonation and finishes lightly astringent. Tough not really balanced in flavor, the taste of this is beer is all IPA, and the aromas are simple yet rich.

Good deal of caramel and crystal malts in the aroma. Sweet, caramel, toast, iced tea, and earthy piney hops. Pours hazy amber, nice head, decent lace. The flavor is mostly toasty and sweet with caramel malts up front followed by earthy piney hops with a medium bitterness in the finish. Nicely carbonated, smooth drinking, just with too much caramel malts for my total enjoyment.

Purchased at systembolaget in Uppsala sometime in the middle of April, 2011. Overall, this was a fantastic beer – one of the best IPAs I’ve had in a while. Pours with deep copper color, producing a towering and resilient white head with tight and sticky lacing. The body is impressive. The nose is hoppy, as the name suggests: florally, mildly citrusy and slightly nutty perhaps. The taste is complex as it gets: very hoppy and sweet from the start, with notes of pine, tropical fruits, malt and grass. The finish is heavily hoppy and lasting – perhaps a bit too lasting. Simply wonderful!

330mL bottle poured golden-amber into goblet with big white head and nice lacing. Earthy aromas. Big hop taste. Another great IPA from Mikkeller.

12 ounce bottle courtesy of Butters at the 14th Richmond Ratebeer Gathering, 3/19/11. Pours a clear copper color with a huge frothy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of big citrus and earthy hops and caramel malts. The taste is citrus, grapefruit, candied citrus and faint caramel malts. Bitter finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle at home, out of my Maudite glass. Pours very murky deep amber/copper, really green cast to this beer, both in the colour of the beer itself and in the head. Pervasively green color, very odd. Head itself is thick and persistent, 2 fingers thick at least, with lovely lacing. Nose is green, sticky hop pellets, really like sticking your nose in a hop bag, full of Centennial or Cascade. Some sweetness underneath, but mostly just big, sticky hops. Flavours are big, bold, and very sweet, but just as intensely bitter. This is your classic "BIG" IPA, lots of caramel, lots of bitterness, not a style of IPA I particularly like, but regardless, this is well-done in this breed of IPA. Well-balanced, in the way an anti-aircraft gun can be well-balanced, with loads of powerful pine and scintillating citrus, the finish is too sweet for me, however. Lovely, and right in line with what they were trying to accomplish, I am sure, but not for me.

Pours dark coppery brown. Nose shows pine, green apples, grapefruit and pineapple. Also some biscuity and sweet clean malt. Similarly fruity flavours, also the piney notes. Then that biscuity malt follows before a powerful, sharp bitterness rolls through. Nice moderately high carbonation.
