3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Keg at Holyrood 9a. Misty Orange with a white head. Aroma spiked a memory of that almond brittle they sell from street carts in spain. Caramel almond gear. The name of it escapes me for now. Massive hop flavour with some reassuring caramel. Long bitter finish. Very nice and jam-packed with hoppy goodness.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Hazy orange with massive fluffy white head. Very nice aroma with citrus (lemon and orange) and fresh light pine. A very nice mix. Taste of the more traditional Simcoe hop variety on first taste. More of pine and chewy long lasting bitterness. As I take another sip I notice some nice lemony tartness and dryness. As I let the sip linger I then notice A teeth squeaker dryness. Every time I try to pigeonhole this one I get another flavor or taste or texture. Damn fine beer. Hard to describe as I have added, erased and changed whole. This is one of those beers you should savor a while before jotting down your thoughts. That being said in this case the individual parts are worth more than the whole. Very interesting to sip and rate but there are more DIPA’s I would rather have on a regular basis.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
11.2 oz. bottle, pours an opaque vibrant orange with a small white head. Aroma of bright tropical fruits, especially oranges, mangos and pineapples. Flavour likewise brings out the tropical fruits, with the above-mentioned fruits, along with some grapefruit and citrusy hops on the finish - pleasant astringency on the finish. Wish I could try this fresher, but it’s tough with these European IPAs in North America. Nonetheless, this packs a great vibrant punch with its tropical fruity hoppiness.

Bottle from a trade with michael-pollack. Pours cloudy burnt orange color with off white head. Big orange/citrus aroma with some sweet malts. Sweet caramel malt flavor with pine, grapefruit, lemon, and some alcohol. Very bitter and resinous. Medium to full body with moderate carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Thanks pollack.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Part of a six IPA tasting session. Listed as Double Imperial Pale Ale.
No freshness date, but I know this was released in February 2012.
Poured from a 330 mL bottle into a snifter.
A: Pours a slightly hazy golden with a 1/2 finger white head.
S: Lots of bright citrus, marmalade, and floral hops. Great aroma.
T: Taste follows the aroma pretty well, with a sweet malt backbone balancing out a high level of bitterness.
M: Crisp, light bodied, and well carbonated.
O: Definitely the best of the tasting. Balance is key here, as with the Hopzilla. Too bad it may only be a one time release, and since it is a single 11.2 oz bottle, it certainly is overpriced like most of Mikkeller’s beers.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
20120405 11.2oz bottle from Honeygo. Attractive beer with cloudy amber body and sticky, lasting, fine white head. Honey and sweet breakfast cereal aroma with a bit of tangerine and lemony dish soap. Tastes a bit old, slightly oxidized like many Mikkeller hoppy pale ales. Intensely bitter across the palate from start to finish and lingering. Not terribly astringent, which is nice. Alcohol and some vinyl notes come through at the end and linger retronasally. This bottle is about 8 oz too much, but that’s way better than 22 oz too much, and for that I am once again thankful for Mikkeller sticking most of their beers in 11.2 oz bottles sold singly. Even if they’re usually around six or seven bucks, it keeps me more likely to try them when I see a new one as it’s less risky than the larger formats for twice the price.
