COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

330ml brown bottle. Amber-orange with haze. Very full off white head with good creamy bead and sticky lace. Nose has some malt sweetness with some mild citrus peels. Taste has some malt sweetness and caramel/crystal malt contrasted with pine and orange and grapefuit hops. Resiny hop finish, orange peels, medium bitterness, dry at the end. Hops linger for a bit. Medium body, mild carbnoation. Hops weren’t as sharp or powerful as I was hoping. A nice beer nonetheless.

As goes for all the Hop Series beers I’ve tasted: the bottles were probably quite old, best before of April/May 2015, so some of the hop characteristics might have already gone away. Nice orange color with big head (darkness varied a bit). Concentrated Grapefruit. Not so much pines as expected (due to the old bottle I guess). Lingering bitterness, but lighter than the Challenger. Despite the age still quite nice.

Bottle, no date, for sure not fresh as this beer is retired. Oh well, here goes! Served in a tulip glass. The beer pours a light brown with a fingers worth of off white head and lots of sediment floating around. Unfiltered I see. Not much lacing is left. Aroma is somewhat pungent. It is definitely and old beer. Citrus, stale pine, and bread. Taste is similar to the smell. Stale pine resin, citrus, bread, and caramel. It’s somewhat sticky but leaves your mouth rather quickly, leaving not much of an aftertaste. I wish this beer was fresh, I feel like it had a lot of potential, but the old age was very obvious with this one.

Bottle. Hazy dark orange with a nicely lasting off-white head. Obviously not fresh, so a kind of experiment I guess. Still a pretty fruity nose, orange, grapefruit, rather onion-y as well, caramel malt, biscuit malt. The flavour is sweet malt, very smooth, orange and some grapefruit, mild bitterness. Unexciting but ages decently for an ipa.

Pours a cloudy dark amber color with a medium thick foamy white head that diminishes gradually. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of musty hops, fruit and malt. Medium body with flavors of grainy malt, ripe fruit and resiny hops. The finish is grainy malt and mild fruity hops. I assume this bottle is older despite being bought recently, but it is tough to blame the store and not the brewer for not providing dating. Slightly above average overall.

330ml bottle from Valhalla’s Goat. Muddy dark amber brown, not much head. Tropical fruit & hop aroma. Leafy tropical fruit flavour. Bitter aftertaste. A great hop.

Pours reddish brown, with a frothy head. Aroma is earthy, sort of fruity, but not the super nice tropical fresh fruit smell, more, a bit off..........taste is malty, slightly fruity, dry finish, not my favorite of the series....

Dark amber and cloudy with a med off white head. Aroma is very earthy and citrus with a lite sweet under tone. Taste just like it smells with a sharpe bitterness on the finsh.

Bottle from a Binny’s mixed 4-pack of Mikkller’s ’Single Hop’series’. Third one in that 4-pack thus far. This one pours a deep, burnt orange, cloudy (my fault as it was in the trunk overnight when it was about 2 degrees here in Chicago), nice off-white head with okay retention and nice lacing, a whole bunch of big chunky floaties though. Nose is more malty than hoppy, some orange peel in there, a hint of pine. Mouth is medium-dry, resinous and lemon zest standing out in a dense orangey-carmelly malt backbone, a bit astringent on the back end with a long, lingering bitter finish.
