This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

Pineapples, spices and a bite of yeasty fruitiness in flavour. Smooth and strong bitter finish. Above par for the series (shared with OleR, Skinnyviking and norbrewer, Copenhagen 29.05.2011).

UPDATED: JUN 13, 2011 11.2oz bottle side by side with Galena and Citra versions. Pours much like the Galena with a little deeper amber color and with a slighter larger head though they look pretty similar. The retention is better than the Galena though it can’t match the enormity of the Citra head. Aroma is slightly better than the Galena but it’s still pretty tame for an IPA with more grassy herbal notes than anything else. Taste is pretty basic as well though it’s not much different than the regular Galena. It might have a little more fruitiness with some pineapples. The finish is bitter and almost metallic. The mouthfeel is a little fuller than the Galena but it’s still short of medium bodied with lots of carbonation. I’d put this one notch ahead of Galena but not in the league of Citra, which was the clear winner of the three.

Scopey (9033) - Croydon, Greater London, ENGLAND - JUN 9, 2011
Bottle at the Mikkeller Single Hop Series tasting at the Kernel Brewery. It pours clear amber with a thick foamy off-white head. The nose is fresh pine, orange, pineapple, mango and farmyard. The taste is tangy orange, lemon, mango, pineapple, pine, grass and hay, with a slightly astringent bitter-dry finish. Tastes really fresh and fruity.

Bottle. Fluffy white lasting head. Hazy amber body. Mild flowery aroma. Mild acidic malty spicy liquorice flavor with a low carbonation and a lovely long bitter aftertaste.

Bottle. Pours a hazy golden amber wit ha big yellowish/beige head. Good lacing. Sweet citrus hop aroma, bordering candy. Malt in the background. Flavour is sweet and malty, with a hoppy freshness. Slightly metallic and with a remote spicy note. Feels a bit heavy. Bitter, slightly tart, fruity finish. The bitterness is bordering liquorice, but doesn’t quite get there. Lingering spicy note ...I’m thinking cloves. Notes of grass as it warms. Overall pretty good. As such a bit too sweet for my usual liking, but it worked here. A crisp, clean, flawless beer. 30.05.11.
