This beer is a part of a Single Hop IPA series by Mikkeller. We created this series to showcase hop varieties on their own. This gives the consumer the possibility of smelling and tasting the unique characteristics of each variety and hopefully helping to educate people about the wonderful world of hops. For each beer, the single hop variety was used in the same weight for bittering, aroma and flavor and for dry hopping. All 19 varieties of single hop beers in this series were brewed the same week and with malts from the same batches and the same yeast and fermentation temperatures. This is done to better compare the characteristics of the different hop varieties.

Pours clear golden amber with a good sized soapy beige head. The aroma has floral / powdery hoppiness and toasty caramel malt. There is also a lot of spicy phenolic traits. Medium body that’s lightly husky with mildly sharp carbonation. The taste starts off with very English-style earthiness to the hops, crackery malt and a bit of spice. The finish is fairly balanced with a larger that normal amount of malt showing through for the series and earthy hoppiness. Okay IPA.

Dark gold. Peach aroma. Sweet fruit, over-ripe oragnes. Dryness in the finish, but the sugar also lingers. Full flavour, but this is a hop to use in moderation.

tap at Blind Tiger, hop series event - I didn’t wind up trying all of the hop series beers, but this is the only one that really stood out for me. Really nice aroma; blueberry and herbal spice, very fruity. sweet berries, caramel candy, touch of sugar. Dry, woody, pine finish.

11.2oz bottle alongside the Amarillo and Tettnanger varietals. Pours hazy golden amber, just like the rest of the series, with a smaller head than the other two and less lacing and retention. The aroma on this one is interesting with what smells like white wine, grapes at least, with some pineapple, maybe some candied fruits as well. The taste doesn’t live up to the promise of the nose for me as it has a much more watery taste with only some grassy hops and a bit more grain than I was expecting. The mouthfeel is decent with good carbonation and fairly light bodied. I really like the nose on this beer, unique among the series for me, but the taste is less impressive. A decent IPA but nothing to write home about. The Amarillo is head and shoulders above the Willamette and Tettnanger.

7/10 i mörkhet. Nötig och humlig i doften. Nötig, humlig och honungsaktig i smaken med en humligt besk eftersmak.

100ml poured from tap at Ølfestival København ’11. Patchy white head, clear, copper coloured body. Malty-fruity aroma. Taste of dusty hops, nut-like malts and pineapples towards the ending. On the sweet side of bittersweet. Below average for the series in my book, but there are still nine more to explore (Copenhagen, 28.05.2011) (rating no. 4200).

Pours deep amber into a snifter. Off-white head with good retention recedes to skim surface. Sweet caramel and mild resin aromas. Crisp sweet dough and earthy caramel upfront turning to resin in the medium length finish.
