This version of the Itís Alive has the mango to give it that sweet fruity tropical fruit taste, while the Chardonnay barrel aging gives it a vineous character. Brett gives the tartness. Complex beer Ė it is very much alive!

Look: Pours with average size off-white bulky head. Fast retention, mostly diminishing within minutes. Leaves moderate lacing. Rich amber colour, mostly clear, slightly hazy. Carbonation visible.

Smell: Fruity, tropical fruits to be exact (pineapple mostly, some melon and mango). Then comes the sour part and big leathery brett funk. Also some white wine in there, maybe a bit of sulphur notes. Spicy. The smell is rich and fresh enough, a good mix for a wild ale.

Taste: Sour and cane like sweetness, fruitiness. Then comes the moderate sweet caramelish middle malt part and then the brett leather funk takes over. Some hints of white wine just before it goes down the throat. Maybe some tart too. Aftertaste filled with light bitterness - pleasant. Missing some of the fruitiness from the smell.

Mouthfeel: Medium dry body. Surprisingly crisp carbonation, adds that fresh character. Drinkable.

Overall: Solid wild ale, some notes from white wine and a little less from mango, interesting mix, worth a try. Brett and sour arenít overwhelming, but do fill most of the aroma.

Bottle @ Mikkeller. Some haze to the amber pour with an off-white head. Aroma is nicely fruity. Good mango, some caramel, vanilla, and tart melon. A touch of pineapple, too. Fairly sweet flavor. Lots of tropical fruit, mango, peach, caramel, and vanilla. Citric tartness, a bit of unripe melon, and apple. A bit musty, too.

Tap at Delirium Tokyo. Rusty amber colour, small off-white bubbly head. Aroma is very nice, mango, gooseberry, lychee maybe, white wine, Brett, and bizarrely gaffer tape. Taste is great too, gueze-like flat creaminess, slightly plastic like, nice mango fruitiness, sour cream. Real nice stuff.

Rating #827 - December 13, 2013 - On tap at Beer Revolution. Clear golden pour with a sticky white foam that bubbles away fairly quick. Wondrous aromas of oaky chardonnay, mango, peach, lavender. Palate is sticky tropical fruit punch sweetness, and the sourness comes in with some glorious oaky dryness. Phenomenal sour ale.

37.5cl bottle. It pours an opaque dark orange body with a medium off-white head. Nose is loads of wine barrel, funk and subdued mango notes. Taste is white wine and funk with horse blanket and some slight fruity notes. If A great funky vinous beer with not much of a fruity character.

How can one not love the Alive line? Itís awesome. Smeelyy- sweet mango fruit meat, honeysuckle, lemonade, wine things - yummo more when warmed. Taste is luscious. Similar to smell with zip and subdued sourness, a lot less fruit, sourness comes out stronger after initial sips, wine notes under sourness and before harder vinegar bite, finishes well. Dig it.

37.5cl Bottle. Cloudy brown, large to begin with, but rather soon small offwhite head. Very nice aroma , white wine, mangos fruits, faint wild yeasts, some belgian funk, and some sweet malts. Flavor a little bit disappointing as the fruity stuff is in the background, and you get more malts and booze flavors. The wood bitterness is not a good match to the already malty sweet notes. The wild yeasts add some fizz and belgian yeasty flavors, making the beer more interesting.

Bottle, 375ml. Nice curtains occur, white head. Clear, dark golden body. Vinous, lemony scent with funk and a peppery touch and some tropical fruits. Some spices in the flavor too, itís vinous and lightly woody, with some bitterness. Some lemon. Full body, quite dry, with a pleasant carbonation level. Lasting finish. A really nice one. 131129
