Keg @ Port st beer house Mcr. very similar to Orval but without the complexity of mouthfeel and unique carbonation. There are citrus notes, brett (obviously) and loads of hops. Lacked the soapy hay barnyard zest of Orval. A good attempt at a clone.

Bouteille 750ml. De couleur ambrée-orangée et voilée. Nez de levures fruitées (agrumes, notes de pêches, traces de poires), légèrement épicées (poivre), rustiques et sauvages, de houblon floral et légèrement herbeux, léger de malt caramélisés aux notes rôties ainsi qu’avec des notes d’alcool. Moyenne-ronde en bouche avec un pétillement moyen ainsi qu’une texture aux notes crémeuses et huileuses. Goût de levures fruitées agrumes, notes de pêches), moyennement épicées (poivre doux), légèrement sauvages aux notes rustiques et terreuses accompagné d’une moyenne amertume asséchante de houblon floral aux notes herbeuses (une amertume présente en arrière-goût toute la gorgée) lors de l’entrée en bouche auquel se rajoute un léger goût de caramel doux avec des notes de pain et de malt rôti puis en finale l’amertume de houblon se fait plus herbeuse et toujours asséchante tout en étant accompagné de petites notes d’alcool. Post-goût long et très sec, moyennement amer de houblon floral et herbeux avec un goût de levures fruitées (zeste d’agrumes, noyau de pêches) aux notes sauvages et épicées ainsi qu’avec des traces d’alcool et de rôti.

Bottle. Tremendous pour ... There’s an orange-amber beer somewhere under that pile of active, rocky foam. The aroma is pure goodness, rife with the scents of great farmhouse brewing. This is a delicious drink, too ... light and easily quaffable, yet full of well-balanced textures ... yeasty malt, fruity esters ... There’s a bit of spring grass here. This is some amazing stuff ... Bottle. Clear yellow/orange with a thick bubbly off white head. Aroma is hay, grass, leather, barnyard, dry herbal and flowery hops, perfumy. Taste is medium sweet and light bitter. Medium body, oily texture, medium carbonation. Light bitter and dry bretty finish.

Poured hazy, with a copper color and an off-white head. Bretts, cucumber, vinegar, green apple, grapes, dill jumps out in the aroma. Smooth on the palate with tons of carbonation. Dry, lasting finish. Excellent!

Picked this up at Premier Gourmet in Niagara Falls New York. I decided to do a side by side with Orval. Pours quite similar, not quite see-through dark orange with a big fluffy white head, some small flecks of lace. Nose is sweet, some citrus peel, Belgian yeast, sweet candy, a touch of caramel. The Orval has a lot of these but rather different. Tastes bitter up front, a touch dry ( but not nearly like the Orval). Distinctly Belgian flavour. Great concept, but I think I still prefer the original.

29/03/2013 Open Baladin Roma (tap). Ambrata, limpida, schiuma bianca abbondante e discretamente persistente. Al naso sentori di malto, spezie, note erbacee, leggero brettato, pelle, suola di scarpa, liquirizia. In bocca è ottima, complessa, appagante, malto, quindi lieviti, alcol, finale abbastanza secco nonostante gli 8 gradi. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Non ha la finezza dell’Orval, ma è ottima.
