merlin48 (317), Henderson, Kentucky, USA Apr 23, 2008 Bottle pours a chill hazed chestnut brown body with an ample tan head that retains well and leaves generous lacing. Aroma begins nutty and chocolate but hops quickly take over with brash notes of pine and grapefruit rind. Creamy carbonation and some hop oiliness noted on the palate. Taste is very assertively hopped with bitter pine and citrus rind. Malts emerge more fully as it warms with a pleasant toastiness that highlights nutty, chocolate, and roasted coffee tones. Very well done. Certainly one of the hoppiest brown ales I’ve encountered.
Fin (1993), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Jul 7, 2008 Picked this bottle up from Uto Beer stall, Borough Market stall, Lahndan tahn, 21-06-08 consumed 04-07-08. Pours conker brown looking a little murky in the depths and with a light brown head. Burnt coffee, roasted malts and some soft brown sugar leap forth from the nose. The taste is fiercely bitter the burnt coffee that was present in the nose returns in the mouth along with some burnt cinder toffee and some further immensely roasted flavours its also hopadoodletastic, very, very nice. Hophead22 (51), Redlands, California, USA Jul 6, 2008 Nice dark brown color, medium brown head. Distinct coffee aroma. A little coffee, and alot of bitterness in the taste, not what I expected at all. a little smokey in the finish, nice beer, but not great. fidel (52), Livermore, California, USA Jul 5, 2008 Dark brown, malty, woody, burnt, grainy, dry starts out ok but finishes strange Adverse2Bitter (33), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Jul 4, 2008 Discount liquor, Milwaukee 10$ , Just a all around disappointment. Sure it has hops, so what. A lot of beers have hops beyond that its just a average micro brew brown beer. I will take a Rouge hazelnut brown any day over this one, and it is half the price for almost twice as much. jsquire (1835), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Jul 4, 2008 Dark amber color out of the bottle with a big, frothy head that left rings of lace on my glass. The nose is chalky with dusty chocolate and something that reminded me of dry dog food. The flavor has lots of roasted grain, chocolate and burnt toast. The finish shows the hops, with a long green finish that tends toward the grassy. Really nice brown ale.
