Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle shared by ajm for his 1000+ affair. Pours coffee in color with a trim beige head. Smells and tastes of balanced notes of plums, almonds, toasted malt, and browned apples. Really enjoyed this.

Bottle from Belmont Station, maybe a year point five old at consumption. This is nasty good! Nose is big with dark fruit, especially fig, thick sweet black malts, a mellow mineral yeast character. Color is a dark blue-black. Flavor is bangin: almond, vanilla, more fig, yeasty powder. Better to me than Rochefort 10. Really great. Really glad I saved it for friends.

Bottle (aka "Monk’s Brew") into Trappist glass. Pours muddy brown with a persistent small off white head. Aromas of cherries, figs, plums, caramel, candy sugar, vanilla and soft spicy hops. Taste is sugary sweet malts with a gentle spicy hop finish and alcoholic warmth to the finish. Mouthfeel is syrupy and velvety smooth with a low carbonation and medium-full body. Reminds me of a Rochefort 10 but not quite as good.

from crackedkettle.com - pours a cloudy brown colour with a modest head retention; fairly malty aroma with light spicy notes and hints of nuts and caramel; full-bodied and quite sweet, thick and slightly oily with a moderate late bitterness; slightly dry finish of malt, nuts and prunes - the strong alcohol content doesn’t really make feel it’s presence

Location: 750 ml bottle from State Line, 2/1/10
As Mikeller Monk’s Brew, bottle purchased approximately 6 months prior to consumption.

Aroma: Aroma of yeast, spice, dark fruits, toffee, caramel, some alcohol notes, and some brown sugar
Appearance: Pours a murky, thick/creamy, brown color with a thick tan head that leaves a good amount of lace on the glass. It almost looks like dark chocolate milk or the byproduct of a melted coke float or something.
Flavor: Taste is mostly sweet, but not overly so, minimal hop presence here. Nice flavor for this one.
Palate: This beer has quite a thick mouthfeel. It is very creamy and smooth, and the alcohol is well-hidden.
Overall Impression: I’m in a really good mood right now, so this might get too high a rating, but in general, you can always assume that one’s mood would affect any particular rating. For example, my ratings from my trip to San Diego were quite high, and one could argue that the great weather had as much to do with these ratings as the quality of the beer. Anyway, I don’t know if it is because of my good mood, that the beer is actually quite good, or a combination of both, but I like this one a lot. I feel like I may have rambled too much on this one, but I just couldn’t help it, I just couldn’t help it, I passed my 4 hour certification exam today, and this beer was a wonderful way to celebrate it!

750ml bottle, 2007 vintage I think. tan cola bubbles, brown body, fizzy head dies quickly. absolutely terribly malt structure - flabby and coarse, watery and stale. artificially sweetened candy and old fruit (plum, date, fig, cherry) layered with a saccharine/plastic medicinal note finishing syrupy and thin. undrinkable.

Pour is cola brown and relatively still with a thin big bubbled light brown head...smell is musty and sweet with dirt, dates, and booze...some cardboard notes as well...taste is almost identical to the aroma in every way...cardboard, sugar, caramel, molasses, booze...finish is lingeringly sweet...bottle more small bottles of the boozey stuff and fewer big ones because everything is too sweet almost...

Bottle. Pours a deep mahogany with reddish highlights and a fizzy off white head that vanishes quickly to a small ring. Aroma of dark fruit, grape juice and sugar. Sweet sugary, malty flavor with a bit of yeasty sourness and very light hop bitterness. Medium to full body with mild carbonation and a syrupy mouth feel. Overall a nice Quad, a bit sweet but not too bad.
