3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 nearbeer (2566) - Knoxville, Tennessee, USA - JAN 31, 2012
750 ml. Opaque chocolate with a small ring of bubbles. Aroma is spicy banana, raisin, but mostly fresh cut apple and walnut lacquer. Taste is fresh cut apple and caramel-raisin liqueur. Medium-heavy body has low carbonation and is well balanced.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Martinus (651) - Nijmegen, NETHERLANDS - JAN 30, 2012
Dark reddish brown colour, small off-white head. Aroma of malts, madeira, caramel, raisins, dried fruits, with dark sugar, chocolate and roasted tones. Flavour somewhat sweet, raisins, dark fruits and slightly bitter dark chocolate. Medium body, slightly bitter hops in the finish, with light spices and some vanilla tones. Quite nice.
(From 75cL bottle, Monk’s Elixer, @ RBBWG 2011, Antwerpen. Thanks for sharing, diabel!)
4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 b79turner (104) - Alabama, USA - JAN 29, 2012
Monk’s Brew, 750mL bottle poured into a tulip glass. Pour was cloudy, muddy brown and with a small tan head. This is very similar to a Trappist beer, the only real difference that I noticed was the cloudiness of the brew. Valiant attempt from Mikkeller, but not quite up to par with the genuine Trappist beers.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 77ships (734) - Antwerpen, BELGIUM - JAN 29, 2012
750 ml bottle sampled @ RBWG 2012 -thx to Diabel – hazy dark brown with a red hue, off-white head, s & t, dried dark fruits, dark malts, brown sugar, slightly roasted, slight bitter chocolate, caramel, hint of berries, bitter hops in the aftertaste with a small hint of spices, medium to full body, ok but not particularly or highly impressive or memorable, especially if you are comparring it with the beers it is referencing but nice one on its own
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 PorterPounder (3936) - Tallahassee, Florida, USA - JAN 28, 2012
Had as Monk’s Brew.....Tallahassee, Fl - Fermentation Market - 750 ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown....almost black with a sticky khaki colored head that leaves plenty of lacing. Enticing aroma with hints of baked brown bread, chocolate and brandy. Flavor is full bodied and delicious with a front end of dates, followed by some canned baked brown bread, brown sugar, a hint of licorice, a wee bit of chocolate and some liqueur like booziness. Mouthfeel is thick and rich, could be a wee tad thicker. Overall excellent and a bargain at $13.30 in my opinion.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 berlinoise2go (340) - NORWAY - JAN 28, 2012
Bottle (33cl) from Magasin Mad & Vin, Copenhagen. Small light beige bubbly head, good retention. Clear, dark reddish brown colour. Aroma of Belgian ale yeast, esters (pear, banana), molasses, malt, caramel. Sweet malty and fruity taste, quite heavy. Some acidity to balance it all off. Full body, soft carbonation. Mildly bitter finish, with a long bittersweet aftertaste. Probably great with desserts - for me a bit too heavy-sweet to enjoy on its own.
1.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 5/20 pentaz (37) - København Ø, DENMARK - JAN 28, 2012
Draft. Dark reddish’ brown pour. Aroma is malt, brown sugar, nailpolish/varnish. Chocolate, roasted malt, brown sugar and acetone. Something was definitively wrong with this brew.
