Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

1 pt. 9.4.fl. oz. corked "champagne" bottle, as Mikkeller Monk’s Brew, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 10%. Very dark brown colour, slightly hazy, huge tan head. Malty and vinous aroma, notes of brown sugar, oak and spices. Rich and warming mouthfeel. The flavour is sweet and malty, again notes of brown sugar, oak and spices, nicely balanced with the hops. Hints of chocolate and coffee. Maybe not quite a trappist, but nearly there. If Mikkel is as skilled at paternosters and avemarias as he is at brewing, he may sign up as a trappist monk any day!

Bottle at Olympen. Sweet, chewy beer, very dark ruby. Heavy on the malt, sugary. Dry cocoa, a little coffee.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Being a product of Taco Bell and Doritos as a child, I completely understand why brewers would throw sugar into beer. It covers odd flavors and smooths things out. That being said, I couldn’t help but notice how close this brew got to the Trappist Rochefort 8. I must be a slave to the machine, but I love it.

Dull murky light brown. Rich, raisiny aroma with light alcohol and a mix of dark fruits. Sweet but soft palate, showing lighter fruits at first, then picking up mild brown sugar notes. The finish takes on an almost vinous quality as the alcohol emerges more. As it warms, a rich cocoa note comes through.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Poured a dark brown with the aroma of dark fruits. Maybe I’m a sucker for big beers, but I thought it was very well made. Tasted of sweet malt and of course dark fruits. Great of the palate. Will try again.
