Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

750ml bottle. Poured a hazy brown color. Not much of an aroma, slightly sweet and a little yeasty. The flavor was hard to pin down as well, a little bready sweet with dark fruits. Ok beer.

Bottle shared at C-bus 13: This is one of those beers that generated a collective, ’’meh’’. There really wasn’t anything that special about it, except that it was Mikkeller. Poured like cola with thin, white bubbles. Aroma had some chocolate and banana peel. Flavor had a woody dryness and chocolate. Tinge of coffee, but thin. Finished a bit boozy but not offensive. Again, really just ’’meh’’.

Bottle, c&c, from Liquid Solutions. As Monk’s Brew. Hazy dark garnet color with a decent creamy beige head. Aromas of softly roasted malt and berries. Flavors of lightly roasted malt, fresh red berries and touches of chocolate and coffee. It’s very laid back and delicious. Goes down incredibly well. Though quite different it has been reminding me of Westvleteren - and I just noticed this is a quad. So I am learning. Perhaps there’s some slight chalkiness; not sure.

Draught at EBF. Murky brown, small tanned head. Sourish, berry nose, some dry fruitiness. Fruity, berryish flavor, little cocoa and syrupy malts. Medium to full bodied, smooth carbonation. Maybe even too easy to drink.

Pours a deep murk brown with a dark head. Aromas of malts, caramel, and dark fruits. Flavors ver much the same, with a somewhat nutty flavor in the finish. Good stuff, I would drink again.
