COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

3oz sample at Expo Cerveza Mexico 2014. A dark beer with a red hue at the bottom and almost no head. Aroma is of caramel, dried fruits and alcohol. Taste is bitter with a somewhat sweet finish. Some carbonation and astringency. Strong floral aftertaste. Reminds me of mint.

My new years beer. Dark reddish brown beer with a quite large foamy head. Aroma is quite Belgian, sweet ripe fruits, sugary malts, yeasty, a hint of alcohol. Taste is very Belgian at first with sweet fruits, plums, raisins, yeast, malts, yeast. Then turns into coffee notes, dark malts and hops. Different than expected, not in a bad way. Medium plus body, smooth and a tad bitter finish. I'd definitely have another :) ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

B.B.D. (best before date) is 25/06/20 written on top of black cap. Goes under "Monk’s Brew" at the LCBO. Pours a hazy copper colour with amber highlights. The head is big, beige, frothy, long lasting and leaves creamy-foamy thick lacing. Aromas of many dark fruits, roasted malts, nutty malts (or yeast) and hops. Something is different though and can be felt more in the taste. Kind of vinous. Sweet grape juices with a little vinegar. Nutty notes again, with some milder dark fruits. Alcohol is present as well. An interesting Quad, but not one I would have again.

Monks Elixir a ruby brown with a light beige head. The nose is rum & caramel with some maple syrup & vanilla. The body is light but spritzy and effervescently refreshing. The taste is tart cranberries, rum, oak, maple syrup - frikin delicious!

Bloody great stuff. Thanks to my mate who brought this from the other side of the globe, a strong belgian style ale; creamy, malty, smooth and doesn’t taste like 10%. Great stuff, probably better on a colder day but slammed one down on a 33c day in Melbourne.

10oz on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Labeled "Monk’s Brew". Dark brown / red color. Thin tan head. Leaves great thicker sheets of lace. Bigger body. Super-smooth, lighter, crisp carbonation. More dry finish. Kind of creamy texture. Light slick. Wonderful dark fruit, some chocolate, vanilla. Raisin, moderate sweet taste, kinda dry finish. Light to moderate bitter. Nice mild warmth. Great belgian quad. Really smooth, bigger body, and creamy. Really good.

2014/12/22 - Pours a hazy brown/amber colour with a, thin, creamy khaki head that quickly reduces to a lingering surface film. Minimal lacing. Aroma is raisins, dates, figs, plumbs, spices, toffee and wood. Taste is raisins, dates, figs, yeast, spice, toffee and a hint if booze. Mouthfeel is medium, with sharp carbonation and a mildly boozy finish. Enjoyable, but if I want a trappist style Belgian strong I will just drink a Trappist Belgian strong. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle - 330ml. Dark brown, hazy body with a thin beige foamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with fruity, vanilla, yeasty, and flowery hints. Alcohol is well hidden. Its robust, well balanced taste carries oaky, plummy, and yeasty notes. Ends with a long, robust, bittersweet finish. Good stuff.
