COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

From tap. Dark brown. Quickly disappearing beige head. Aroma of higher alcohols, paint cupboard and nail polish. Dark caramel, dark malts and berries in taste and aftertase. Aftertaste is better than the taste itself.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2014 75cl bottle. Dark brown coloured, beige foamy head. Aroma and taste are big on sweet roasted malts with grainy and earthy tones, caramel, butterscotsch, coffee, chocolate, raisins/figs and clove; minimal yeasty acidity; a little bitter. Dry (!) aftertaste, lingering bitternes. Soft mouthfeel, a bit sticky, good body, medium carbonation.

Shared a 33cl bottle. Pours a brown colour with a small tan head that quickly vanishes. Aroma is chocolate, liquorice, alcohol and dates. Soft carbonation and medium to full body. Taste is a well balanced mix of sweet and bitter flavours. Overall, a complex, multi-dimensional beer. Tasteful and very digestive.

UPDATED: AUG 30, 2014 On tap at Mikkeller bar, june 21, 2014; Bottle, august 30, 2014. Clear dark brown with a red to pink hue. Small beige head, medium retention, good lacing. Light fruity nose, sweet malts. Aromas of ripe fruits, sweet raisins, dried plums, caramel, candy sugar. Very sweet, medium bitterness to balance. Full-bodied, syrupy, a little astringent, medium carbonation. Long sweet finish. Not on the nauseating side you can often find in Belgian-style beers. I like it a lot, but it is far less sweet and complex than the equivalent La Trappe for example.
