COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

pours dark and opaque with a thick, lasting cream colored head and lots of lacing. plum, underripe cherry and fig aromas with some grape soda and medicinal notes. taste is rich with dark plums, blackberry, leather, quince paste, rubber and nutmeg. finish is alcoholic and a bit hot. A lovely beer but no Westvleteren or Rochefort.

Part of the 2014 Mikkeller Feature and the LCBO. The beer poured a dark reddish brown with a tan coloured head. The aroma is roasted malt, yeast and grains. The mouthfeel is full bodied with above average carbonation. The flavour is dark roasted malt, floral hops, and dark fruits. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Lot of dark fruits and yeast in the mouthfeel A good beer. I can only think that the barrel aged versions are better, but this is very good..

330 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. As “Monk’s Brew”.

App.: Very deep mahogany with a fluffy light tan head that lasts a long time. Aroma: Bright fruitiness, toffee and brown sugar, dark bread crust, a minty herbal note, a bit boozy, faint vanilla, a little woodsy, might be a touch medicinal? Palate: Medium+ body, relaxed carbonation, lightly creamy. Flav.: A little harsher than the nose with more apparent alcohol, still has some nice rich maltiness, herbal notes, esters, then more booze; off-dry with moderate to low bitterness and a very boozy, malty finish.

Too much alcohol comes through.

(330ml bottle from the LCBO, as "Monk’s Brew") Pours a clear medium brown tinged red with a small off white head that faded to a ring with lots of spotty lace. Aroma is predominately sweet with a faint sourish edge, and a little spicy. Bready caramel sweet malt and yeast combo has dried and stewed read fruit, maybe currants?, candied apple, lots of brown sugar, Christmas cake spices. Once the scent of artificial grape flavouring is raised by my girlfriend that is hard to escape. Palate has quite sweet caramel and brown sugar core, candied fruit, a little bready, a diffuse sort of herbal spice building in the finish, fair amount of alcohol heat. Also a bit of that grape flavouring again, after it’s mentioned. Medium body, a little slick and light for the style, soft carb. It’s a pretty good stab at a style with some excellent benchmarks, but compared to the best abts it is not as rich and mouth filling, and lacks the complexity and finish to match the sweet malts.

330ml bottle. Deep mahogany with a foamy beige head. Flavors are bread, dark fruits, molasses, toffee, chocolate, spices and alcohol with woodsy hops. Medium to full body, moderate to high carbonation, oily texture. Not in the same league as its Belgian counterparts, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Piwo smaczne slodowe wyczuwalne figi i daktyle. odrobina suszonych sliwek w czekoladzie.

A retester.

Draught at BrewDog Bristol on 21 Nov. Poured a very dark brown, with an off white head. Aroma of rich fruit, spices, big malt and Belgian yeast. Big flavours of prunes, caramel and grain. Full mouth feel. Finish was nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, brown bread, toffee and figs. Fab!
