Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Another great beer from this brewery. Pours brown with a soft red hue, tall beige head leaving lots of lacing behind. Cocoa and prune up front, bready with a soft licorice and clove note. Flavor was very well rounded, not really boozy, soft fruity tartness towards the finish. I would like to try this with a year on it to see if the tartness grows.

750ml bottle topped with a plastic cork and a wire cradle. Shared at a post-birthday party in Tromsø. Opens with shot and noise. Pours a beige head covering a hazy, dark brown body. Inviting smell of dark malts and dried fruits. Wine-like taste with lots of raisin and plums slightly spiced and followed by a solid dry, bittersweet ending. Mild alcohol hints. Soft natural carbonation. Full bodied (14.06.2008).

Draught. Clear dark reddish brown colour topped with a creamy beige foam. Sweet malty and fairly yeasty aroma of raisin, and spices. Full and rather vinous flavour and alcohol. Long warming finish of raisin, alcohol, brown sugar. This is the first time i try a beer that i prefer bottled to Draught.

Dark ruby/burgundy color with a full head that forms interesting shapes. Aroma is pretty vibrant and shows some juicy dark fruits. Flavor has some hints of banana to accompany the dark fruit notes. It is lacking in body and texture for me. Hmmm, it’s pretty good. Young right now. Somewhat disappointing in that it isn’t in the same league as some of the better Belgian strongs, but it’s still a tasty, well brewed Belgian style ale, certainly better than almost all American versions.
