Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle, pours dark amber with a big, rocky, tan but short lasting head. Virtually no lacing. Nose of roasted malt and caramel. Sweet flavour with caramel, dark malt and raisins. Sweet finish with a little dryness at the end. Syrup texture. Full bodied. OK, but not a great brew. Qardruples is one of my favorite beers, but I prefer the Belgian ones.

Brown with an acceptable head that drops quickly. Aroma of cucumber, basement, spice and dark fruits. The flavour is sweet, but more bitter than the normal trappist strong ale/quadrupel. It ends like bitter liquorice. The palate is way too thin and the carbonation too flat to really match the best of the trappists.

Tap at Olutkellari Helsinki. Brown black with small head. Nose is malty, spicy with some liqourice. Flavor is spicy with roasted coffee and liqourice with quite little maltiness. Alcohol is detectable. Thin feel with little carb. A bit disappointing. Flavor is good tho, a bit similar to rocheforts.

(Last beer in a 10-part barley wine tastathon, so my notes are unreadable at this point.) "Funny, fishy aroma. Anenege (???) aroma, nutty."

Tasted 2008-02-29. Pours unclear, brown with beige head. Aroma: caramel, brown sugar, alcohol, prunes. A little cloying! Flavour: Moderately bitter and heavily sweet. Full, rich body. I dunno? I like it, but maybe it’s just a little much; It’s my least favourite Mikkeller so far! Maybe I just expected something else - it’s definately well brewed! ... ... ... As I keep writing, I’m more and more convinced, that this is a very good beer, that I just doesn’t fully appreciate right now because I’m simply just not in the mood for a quad. ... I have rated as fairly as I can right now. I’ll revisit a day, when I’m just dying for this style!
