Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Sampled at Mikkeller tasting at West Lake View Liquors. Pours red brown with a beige head. Nose is phenomenal. Floral, brown sugar, caramels, toffee and yeast. Floral caramels, brown sugar, light malts in the flavor. Complex and tasty.

On tap. Nice and promising in the appearance. Taste with a hint of a mixture of dadels, figs and raisins therefore rather sweet. Yeast taste is coming through loud and clear as well as the alcohol burden. A bit too much gas. Moderate quadrupel!

For me this one seemed like it was going to be great and then fell down. Pours mahogany with a bit of a small tan head. The aroma has buttermilk biscuits, dense semi-sweet toffee, vanilla and cream - very nice. It has a medium body that is on the sharp side. The taste begins with thick alcoholic malt, some acidity and lots of burn ~ this was nothing like the aroma. The finish has more burn and is on the medicinal side.

Poured a hazy brown color with an off-white head. The aroma and flavor were malty with some roasted character. Dark fruits with a hint of tartness in the aroma. Moderately bitter finish.

hazy dark amber, fine beige head, sweet fruity aroma with light earthy hops, creamy body, rich malt flavor, lots of ripe fruit character, warming, light bitterness adds balance but allows the fruit to steal the show,
