COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

UPDATED: MAY 20, 2014 Draught at Craft Bier Fest Wien. Dark copper to brown body, with a medium, creamy, beige head. Aroma of nuts, toffee, dark dried fruits, roasted malts, honey, some chocolate. Taste with about the same aromas. Mouthfeel is full, oily, with a medium carbonation and it finishes bitter, sour, sweet and complex. Very good, very complex and heavy. Although I’ve had better Quads, still very enjoyable!

Deep red-brown color, beige head. Fruity, malty nose, Belgian yeast, chocolate, prunes, roasted malt, candi sugar, hint of coffee. Malty taste, dried fruit, Belgian yeast, earthy notes, a bit too sweet. Full body, warming alcohol, thick mouthfeel, I would like more carbonation. A good quadrupel, but not quite up to the standard set by Rochefort and Westvleteren.

Bottle at home for NHL playoffs. Pours muddy brown with frothy beige head. Nose is light candy and alt. Tastes of licorice, caramel, prunes, yeast, some cherry. Light bodied for a quad. Small alcohol on finish.

Bottle at home from Brewtique, Macclesfield. I do love this style so I was expecting good stuff and Mikkeller rarely let me down. Fruity aroma, yeast, oh aye this is nice. Flavour has sugar, alcohol and in a good way, yeast, dark fruits. Pretty much what I expected, a big fat dollop of awesome.

Bottle @ home. Marrone velata, con riflessi ramati. Schiuma beige fine , poco persistente. Fruttato di albicocca sotto spirito, liquore zucchero di canna, lievito belga e luppolo aromatico. Dolce amabile all’ingresso, acida, abbastanza amara, abbondantemente luppolata. Gusto molto inteso e parecchio persistente. Retrolfattivo di noce fresca. Poco carbonata, alcolica, è una birra corposa equilibrata e decisamente armonica.

A- pours a murky copper brown with cola edges. Finger of light tan head with good retention and lacing. S- cornucopia of dried fruits and esters. Lots of raisins, figs, plums and overripe apples and cider. Lightly burnt caramel, banana, biscuits, brown sugar and yeast support. M- moderate smooth oily body with a medium burn on the semi sweet palate. Mild to medium carbonation. T- begins sweeter with the caramel and malts. Some yeasty character. Brown sugars and a tad dirty. Alcohol and minerals start to come through in the middle as well as bananas. Ending reveals the dried fruits from the aroma. Good raisins and figs. More bananas. Ripe apples are also prominent with wet wood. Long and sweet.
