COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle @ home. Pours with a very dark brown colour, big long lasting off-white frothy head. Aroma is medium to heavy malty, with complex notes of fruit, lightlt hoppy; additional very light notes of cheese. Taste is medium to heavy sweet, light bitter, light sour, good. Medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation.

330 mL bottle. Closer to a Rochefort than a Westy. But not as good as either. It’s smaller, even as it warms. The malt complexity just isn’t there, and it’s a little boozy. That’s not to say that this isn’t a really solid quad on its own. Age may soften and fill this one out a little.

Pours into the glass a deep darkness with a frothy old time root beer style cap. Taste is all Halloween sugar glory. It’s almost like drinking flat grape soda pop or licking a flavoured candy cane. And that is clearly a lack of balance & a bit of a fail. Doesnt stand up to its peers in the style. Overrated.

Lots of plums, and dark ripe fruit. Big bready malts and loads of dark sweet brown sugar. Lively carb, and good mouth feel. Sweet dark fruit flavour, low bitterness, with a big fruity, bready malt finish.

Deep brown pour with a thick tan head. The nose is rich and softly sweet. Has a fairly bright plum and date nose. There is a touch of raisin and a little bit of cherry as well. Fairly boozy but not entirely unpleasant. There is a touch of fruity tartness that, along with the booze, cuts through the sweetness a bit. It’s got a fairly nice candi sugar flavour along with a soft stewed fruit sweetness. Nice brew.
