Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

A personal favourite.750ml bottle at Den Gode Nabo in Trondheim. Near black with crisp slightly brown head. Fruity, plum/raisins, vanilla and caramel taste. Smells much the same although woodier. Well concealed alcohol taste. Try it, love it!

On-tap. Bishops Arms Järntorget. Gothenburg. Hazy brown colour with a beige head. Aroma: Maltiness, spices, fruit, nuts and alcohol. Taste: Sweet malt, alcohol, dark fruit, nuts, meat, lightly yeasty and fenolic. A bit less alcohol and a bit more belgian yeast character would be good for this beer. Also served way to cold.

75cl bottle at Olympen. Labelled as Monks Brew. It poured a very dark brown, almost black colour with a big light-brown creamy head. The aroma is sweet and fruity with notes of raisins, hops, vanilla and strawberry. Very nice. The flavour is also sweet and fruity, again with notes of raisins, hops, vanilla and strawberry. Very little alcohol. It has a lingering, but a bit short aftertaste. This is one of the best beers from Mikkeller yet.

75cl bottle. Dark brown color with a minihead. Aroma is plums, chocolat and some caramel sweetness. Taste is about the same as the aroma with plenty of brown sugar and dark fruit in there aswell. Alcohol presence is pretty big and ruins it a bit for me.

My second rating from my work desk - its been a very good week, so deservedly I should have this beer. Dark brown color, minimal head. Molasses and brown sugar dominate the nose. Big molasses flavors, brown sugar, dark fruit, just a touch of chocolate, but depth isn’t so great. What is great, is the 10% alcohol is very well hidden. Smooth and dangerous. I think they are definitely aiming at Rochefort, but fall a bit short. Fig and molasses in the finish.
