Bottle - Brown sugar, red fruit and alcohol. Dark brown, with a quickly fading brown head. Ripe red fruits are prevalent, brown sugar and only the slightest hint of alcohol. A decent trappist type and much cheaper than a Westy.

Dark thick brown, looks heavy. After pouring without getting to close to the glass, I can smell the funk lingering. smells funk, yeast, malt, dark fruits. Tastes dark fruit, caramel, toffee and roasted flavours. A dark beauty.

750 ml. brown bottle. Capped, not corked & caged. No freshness date seen. Weak pfftt when opened. Poured out a deep reddish cloudy brown color, with an average mocha colored head. Aromas are subdued, with brown sugar being most prevalent. Some biscuit malts & old hops round out the aromas.
Flavors are of caramel, rum soaked raisins, some cloves. Slightly burning as it’s swallowed. Alcohol is well hidden. Decent beer overall. $16 at Perfect Pour.

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 andrewturba (456) - Alberta, CANADA - NOV 17, 2012
Pours a very dark brown with little tan head dissipating to very little lace. Aroma is a bit woody maybe oak but complex, a bit of booze(not uncommon for the style) dried cherry and rasin. Flavour is strong coming from the bit of booze but a nice touch, notes of caramel dried cherry and rasin. Complex and does not disappoint as per usual from mikkeller.
4.7 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 Reimer96 (589) - Alberta, CANADA - NOV 17, 2012
Pours a murky dark brown with a nice tan colored head that leaves some lace. Smell is sweet and oaky with a slight bit of alcohol. Taste is sweet with some figs and a very smooth and well balanced malt to booze profile. Booze is definitely present but it is kept under control very nicely.
4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Beerenberger (789) - Fischer, Texas, USA - NOV 15, 2012
(Bottle labeled as Monks’ Brew which is an alias of Monks Elixir ) A sweet toasty bread aroma greets the nose. Pours a black /brown with ruby highlights and a moderately lasting rocky tan head. Dark fruit- prunes, raisens - sweet malt, hints of cherries, and a blast of pleasing alcohol in the finish and aftertaste. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Overall, wow! This is a very tasty beer! Will drink again.
