The nose is of cocoa nibs and dark fruits – raisons and dates. Full-bodied and lightly creamy with restrained carbonation. Sweet and bursting-at-the-seams with dates and figs. Aroma is yeasty, belgian sugar and malt. Taste is spicy, fruity and lots of yeast flavours, also banana, caramel, sugar, a little oaky. Finishes slightly thin, and with a fair ammount of alcohol. Very reminiscent of Bernardus 12. A good beer. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA Apr 5, 2009 Pours dark brown, with a smallish off white head. Big dark fruit aroma, grapes and plums especially, with some candy sugar and sweet malt aromas. The flavor is pretty solid, although fairly standard for a quad. Not overly interesting or complex, but a nice sweet, malty, fruity, quad with proficiently masked alcohol burn. In fact thats probably its best trait, its alcohol masking abailities. Solid. Muggus69 (500), Sydney, Australia Apr 5, 2009 750ml corked bottle. BB 7/4/14
Pours a murky bronze body with a small but thick and persistant tan head.
Nose seems a bit hoppier than most, citrus and herb, lots of rich vinous fruit; raisins, plums, dates, dark brown sugar, port and brandy-like alcohol presense. Has a slight mustiness surrounding it, which I could just be imagining.
Thick rich body, as expected from a beer of this size, creamy near-velvet texture, moderate carbonation. Alcohols on the way down.
Plenty of the aroma translates to the body; figs, plums, some citrus rind, dark cherries, bubblegum, brown sugar, port. Finishes somewhat dry and not as lengthy as I was hoping. Slight sharp citrusy bitterness to boot.
A very nice Belgian dark strong, no doubt, though the alcohol isn’t that well hidden and it has a slight citric sharpness which probably puts it a rung below more authentic Belgian counterparts. JohnnyJ (1283), Carlsbad, California, USA Apr 4, 2009 Bottle at the 09 Belgian Beer Fest. Chunky brown pour. Lots of floaters. brown sugar, dark fruit, plum, raisin, and bread. It’s alright, worth a try.
