Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

(Rating #2380)

750ml bottle. Synthetic cork stamped 07/04/14. Poured a medium brown color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of dark fruits, caramel, some yeast, a little woody, and some chocolate. Tastes of dark fruits, lighter yeast, chocolate, caramel, and a little bready. Light to medium alcohol burn that creeps up a few seconds after I drank (but overall well hidden).

4/25/2009: Like so many of the other Mikkeller brews, Monk’s Brew didn’t really do mucyh for me. It is good, but just isn’t anything special. The aroma and flavor include deep dark fruits, caramel, fruity malt, and bubblegum. This beer also has a sticky texture.

Sample from bottle at Dark Lord Day 2009. Rating #227 for this beer.

Style; glass: ABT/Quadrupel; Trappist 25.4 fl oz x 10% ABV = 254 / 60 = 4.23 beers * 150 C = 634.5 calories (est.) Purchased at: The Foodery at 3rd and Arch, Philadelphia, PA for $25.00 Aroma: caramel, tar, dirt, dust, earth, wine, fruit, cherries, mold, cellar, dank Visuals: brand conscious packaging, stylish, deep dark copper body, tan head, staying, looks like an illustration of hell, in a good way. Taste: well balanced, sweetness up front gives way to funky sourness, and finishes with a delicate bitterness. Phenomenal. Palate: active carbonation, not drying, rounded mouthfeel. Overall: Delicious, if expensive. Like many other Mikkeller brews, this one is a great take on the style.

Bomber shared with soccer290. Poured a deep and hazy amber color with a nice one finger width tan head. Swirls lasted on top of the beer throughout the duration of it. It also had a good amount of yeast floating in it. The aroma consisted of plums, raisins, other dried fruit, and a lot of caramel malt. A lot of the more pleasant aromas came out as the beer warmed. The taste consisted of a lot of raisin, plum, and caramel malt with a bit of an alcohol warming. I was extremely surprised with the light mouthfeel of this brew also. Overall, a good quadruple that gets better as it warms.

Graciously shared at DLD. Nice brown pour wtih a small whitish head. Very spicy aroma that smells quite sweet. Yeasty and fruit also peek out int he aroma. Flavor is rich and spicy. Sweet, powerful with yeast and a very slight bitterness. Yep its good. Hella good.

22 oz bottle shared with General66 (thanks Bobby!). Pours an apple cider brown with a small off white head that dissipates quickly. Smells of plum, raisin, fresh red grapes, and caramel malt. Tastes of raisin, though upon warming the plum comes out, and the malt disappears with warmth, bringing a nicer flavor. I thought it was a little difficult to drink when it was more malt, but it was fine after a few minutes. Very good beer, but not the best Quad I’ve had.
