Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle 330 ml from a trade with Countbeer, thanks. Into a snifter, ABV 10% Dark mahogany brown colour on the body, with a bit more than a finger of head, tan in colour, thick but kind of froathy, with good retention neverhteless, leaving medium lacing on the glass. Aroma has prunes mainly, some faint chocolate, berries, red grapes. Taste is moderate sweet with a light acidity in too, with prunes once again, grapes and vinous notes, light caramel on the finish. The alcohol very well hiiden for its level.Medium thin body, good carbonation. Overall very good, very close to the better trappist ones.

Deep reddish dark brown with big tan head. Very fruity, peach, strawberry, grapes, fruit candy. Lots of spices, fresh dough, raisin bread. Very sweet, with strong alcohol bitterness. Full bodied, nice carbonation. Great stuff, but the alcohol is a bit harsh...

Nice dark brown colour and a thin, offwhite head. Aroma has malts, sugary sweetness, and some caramel. Taste is very interesting, not in line with the aroma at all. A hint of bitterness. You get kind of a hollow feeling in the sense that the taste dissipates quickly. It’s quite usual Mikkeller beer, they take on a beer style and put their own twist into it and usually the results are pretty good.

On tap at Bier Station 3-8-14. Brown with orange highlights, a finger of off white head and good lacing. Aromas of plum and fig along with brown sugar and anise. Taste follows nose with those dark fruits and a brown sugar sweetness. Light anise flavor along with some clove spiciness and just a trace of alcohol and warmth. Finishes with some of that spiciness but is mostly dry. Medium bodied with a medium/high carbonation. Well integrated flavors. Good but not outstanding.

P: Pours a dirty brown body with chunky floaters and a airy khaki head that settles to a swirled wake. Milky lacing slips and slides around the edges. S: Oxidation has set in. A treasure trove of dark fruits soaked in spiced rum, old leather, slight vegetable matter, graham cracker pie crust, and faint whiffs of banana bread. T/M: Oxidation has hit this hard with a soapy residue masking the flavors and covering the palate. Dark fruits, heavy handed spice and bitter apple peels still shine through. Anise star, clove, cinnamon, and pippali pepper, cardboard, bready yeast and Belgian candy sugar. Stick body that has wondered on the side of light-medium. A hefty dose of carbonation allows this brew to tingle the entire mouth. O: This bad boy has been in my closet for about 2 years and I kept forgetting about it. Glad I finally pulled it out and enjoyed it. Slightly oxidized but overall a great beer. I really enjoyed the dark fruits, spices and rum mingled into the yeasty backdrop. Serving type: bottle
