Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

(From old notes. Bottle at Pikkulintu on 2007-12-31.) Lots of malts and their sweetness, but not too sweet. Also, contained pleasant fruitiness normally found in Belgian beers. I really liked this one.

750ml bottle labeled as "Monk’s Brew". Shared by BeerGestapo, thanks Mike. Pours a very dark brown that has ruby edges, small off-white head. This was a very complex beer that had many layers in both the nose and flavor. Bouquet has notes of raisin, plum, bread, brown sugar, and a hint of cherry. The flavor was bready malts, raisin, and cherry with a hint of passion fruit. The finish leans toward sweet with a touch of yeasty spice. It had a smooth velvety mouthfeel with little alcohol presence. The was a small amount of warmth near the end of the glass as well as a bunch of yeast sediment.. Very tasty indeed.

Pours a deep brown with a perfect medium beige head. Aroma is full of cinnamon, brown sugar, spice, gentle malt. Smells sweet, smells good. Flavor repeats the aroma theme, and adds cream, yeasts, and a touch of hop. Not as sweet as anticipated, which is just fine in this case; there’s enough going on anyway - very complex. The alcohol is pretty evident, surprisingly; usually Mikkeller isn’t known for that (except in the case of Black, of course). The mouthfeel is just average, a little thin for the style, but decent overall. Okay, so it’s not one of the Big Three (Westy, Bernie, Rochefort), but it is an easily likeable and accurate impression of them and the style. Pretty authentic and not a bastardization, in other words. In the end, I could dig this over and over. I would rank this 4th in all the quads I’ve had thus far, above De Koningshoeven/La Trappe and the others. Easily. Overall, excellent to world class.

A dark brown colored beer, with a thick beige head. The aroma of dark malts, with coffe candy with some chocolate. Some sweetness with spices. The taste of dark fruits like prunes and raisins. There is chocolate bitter with some sweet. The aftertaste is bitter with a little sweet and chocolate.

Pours classic dark brown with a foamy brown head which dissapears quite quickly. Aroma is yeasty, belgian sugar and malt. Taste is spicy, fruity and lots of yeast flavours, also banana, caramel, sugar, a little oaky. Finishes slightly thin, and with a fair ammount of alcohol. Very reminiscent of Bernardus 12. A good beer.

Pours a deep murk brown with a dark head. Aromas of malts, caramel, and dark fruits. Flavors ver much the same, with a somewhat nutty flavor in the finish. Good stuff, I would drink again.

Bottle. Pours a rich brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is caramelized malts and dark fruits. Notes of candy sugar, caramel, a bit of bread, and a bit of alcohol. On the palate, it is nicely carbonated and more refreshing than I thought it would be. The flavor brings out a bit of fruity yeast. The finish is a bit dry, but it leaves a nice alcohol burn. I little strong, but still very good.
