Commercial Description:
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

750ml corked bottle. BB 7/4/14 Pours a murky bronze body with a small but thick and persistant tan head. Nose seems a bit hoppier than most, citrus and herb, lots of rich vinous fruit; raisins, plums, dates, dark brown sugar, port and brandy-like alcohol presense. Has a slight mustiness surrounding it, which I could just be imagining. Thick rich body, as expected from a beer of this size, creamy near-velvet texture, moderate carbonation. Alcohols on the way down. Plenty of the aroma translates to the body; figs, plums, some citrus rind, dark cherries, bubblegum, brown sugar, port. Finishes somewhat dry and not as lengthy as I was hoping. Slight sharp citrusy bitterness to boot. A very nice Belgian dark strong, no doubt, though the alcohol isn’t that well hidden and it has a slight citric sharpness which probably puts it a rung below more authentic Belgian counterparts.

On tap at Lord Nelson. Poured a dark brown with a light brown head. Aroma had notes of sweet malts and yeast. Flavor was sweet from both candied sugar and malts with a bit of an underlying alcohol bite. Nice and thick on the tongue.
