Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle. Very dark brown with a nice cappucino coloured head. Wow! An aroma of chocolate, dried fruit, toffee and a hint of flowers (tulips?). Very complex. On the palate it is massive and appears slightly sweeter than it actually is (FG=1007). Loads of malty notes, chocolate and dark candij sugar. Very nice creamy mouthfeel. This is a great beer. By far the best dark Belgian ale to be produced by a Danish Micro so far and a worthy challenger to the best Belgian ales made around the world.

75cl bottle at Olympen. Labelled as Monks Brew. It poured a very dark brown, almost black colour with a big light-brown creamy head. The aroma is sweet and fruity with notes of raisins, hops, vanilla and strawberry. Very nice. The flavour is also sweet and fruity, again with notes of raisins, hops, vanilla and strawberry. Very little alcohol. It has a lingering, but a bit short aftertaste. This is one of the best beers from Mikkeller yet.

got lucky and had a night of good beers. had never even heard of this brewer before a good friend introduced me to this beer. difficult to find flaws in this beer that somehow has reproduced a kind of expert home-brewed feel to it. mine poured a dark brownish color with little head. kind of cloudy looking. aroma was pretty hard to identify except for a very refined yeast and fruit. the flavor told me that some love went into brewing this one. all kinds of stuff hitting me at once, but all very softly.

Mahogany brown ale with thick creamy head and characteristic brettanomyces yeast aroma. Sour cherries, caramel and chocolate hide underneath the funk. Thick body with fantastic complex flavour, sweet at first, then sour, finishing with roasty chocolate and rich fruits. Very little alcohol presence. Very easy to drink for 10%!

Pours a very dark brown with little tan head dissipating to very little lace. Aroma is a bit woody maybe oak but complex, a bit of booze(not uncommon for the style) dried cherry and rasin. Flavour is strong coming from the bit of booze but a nice touch, notes of caramel dried cherry and rasin. Complex and does not disappoint as per usual from mikkeller.

Bella schiuma, bel naso (zucchero candito, frutta scura, uva passa, malto tostato, spezie) riscaldato da un alcol pervasivo ma non bruciante. Robusta più che rotonda al palato, più abboccata che tostata, il luppolo non ne abbatte completamente la componente dolciastra, che rimane lungamente presente; relativamente carbonata, solo nel finale una nota torrefatta riesce a ricondurre alla ragione l’imponente impatto fruttato, lasciando un palato morbido ma non saturo. Consolatoria, riscaldante, tranquillizzante: una birra da tenere a riscaldarsi in una bella coppa sul bracciolo della poltrona.

UPDATED: MAR 20, 2008 Tap @ Cph Øldage. Pours a dark golden red with a fine creamy brown head. Aroma is complex and fruity. Plums, raisins and other dark fruits. Taste is even more complex. A touch sweet, but not too much. A little clingy and creamy, but still fresh and ’alive’. Dark fruits and spices abound. Extremely satisfying brew - and a stunning balance between everything.

Later tasting: Still an extremely nice beer, though the alcohol may have taken over a little bit. 4.3

On draught at Copenhague beerfestival 2007. Pours a red copper brown beer with a slight beige head. A lot going on in the aroma’s, lots of fruits, lots of berries, some roastyness and hints of coffee. Flavour got me to think of the westey 12 of four years old. Bready flavours with addition of coffee, caramel and a good balanced touch of bitterness. Mikkeller proves here to be brewing at higher standards than most belgians do. Very well balanced and alcohol extremely well hidden. Nice sweet and long finish.

<Draught at Ølbaren> Even after all the christmas brews, this one was still powerfull. Absolutly amazing vinouse nose of alchohol tons of begian yeast transformed into darkfruits, some brown sugar and caramel aswell. Bubbling texture and a nice intense mouthfull with sweet fruity notes and a very plesant warming alchohol.
