Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle (33cl) from Magasin Mad & Vin, Copenhagen. Small light beige bubbly head, good retention. Clear, dark reddish brown colour. Aroma of Belgian ale yeast, esters (pear, banana), molasses, malt, caramel. Sweet malty and fruity taste, quite heavy. Some acidity to balance it all off. Full body, soft carbonation. Mildly bitter finish, with a long bittersweet aftertaste. Probably great with desserts - for me a bit too heavy-sweet to enjoy on its own.

Bottle shared @ Ölrepubliken. Pours dark reddish brown with a big off-white head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of lacing on the glass. Smell is malty, sweet and full-bodied with dried sweet fruits, liquorice root, ginger, hazelnuts, wood and spices. Taste is malty, sweet and spicy with sweet fruits, alcohol, cherries, nutmeg and other spices. Mouthfeel is surprisingly thin for the style but still medium bodied. finish is sweet, malty fruity and spicy.

Bottle @ RBBWG thanks to Diabel. Dark brown coloured beer with a medium off white head and some average carbonation. Rather fruity and slightly caramel malty and spicy hinted aroma. Full palate. Finish is smouth and strong, slightly hoppy with some nice balanced spicy touches. Very nice.

Bottle. Huge toffee nose, raisin and dried plums. Dark brown with lace. Flavors of vanilla, caramel, very, very malty, toffee, light fruits. Starts out shockingly malty in a great way, with rich caramel, but quickly gets tiring as it is too sweet and cloying. Still nice, but lacks the balance of a great abt.

Enjoyed this as Monk’s Brew, not Elixir... but whatever. Very boozy quad, almost too much so. Still a fine beer.

Bottle. 2006 vintage enjoyed in 2013. Hazy brown liquid with small to medium light tan head. Aroma of port, dark fruit, licorice, chocolate, bread, grapes, light bubblegum and toffee. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of licorice, port, dark fruit and roasted malt. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice, the roasted malt works well.
