COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle 33cl. Brownish beer with a tan and frothy head, persistent and creamy. Aroma is to toasted malts, nuts, dried fruits, caramel, licorice, vinous, brown sugar. Flavour is sweet, nutty, almond, with an aftertaste alcoholic and sweet, like brown sugar. Easy to drink. Average carbonation, with moderate body and long sweet final.

Draft on tap at FFF XV Party (Munster, IN). Pours a rich roasty brownish black hue, dry and dark, near opaque with a dfrohthjy small brownish head thay dies to a ring. Aromas are a touch sweet, brown sugar, touch of cherries, vanilla, and spice. Initial is sweeter, vanilla and caramel, lots of sweetness, mellow and smooth. A gentle sweetness, vanilla, brown sugar, and touches of toast. Gentle spice, vanilla, toffee, and caramel. Gentle, very nice. Nice Belgian beer by the guys at Mikkeller. Offering some firm flavors and good synergy, perhaps a touch sweet but it did work pretty well for me. Very nice Quad.

12/30/11. 750mL bottle labeled as "Monk’s Brew." Dark brown pour with a nice, big tan head that sticks for quite awhile and laces in soapy rings. Really big dark, fruity aroma with tons of molasses, more dark fruits, a bit of roast, and plenty of alcohol. Very sweet, sweeeet flavor of dark fruits, brown sugar, yeast, and even some sort of light, tropical fruitiness. The flavor is much better than the aroma... not nearly as harsh. Nice!

Bottle (33cl) from Magasin Mad & Vin, Copenhagen. Small light beige bubbly head, good retention. Clear, dark reddish brown colour. Aroma of Belgian ale yeast, esters (pear, banana), molasses, malt, caramel. Sweet malty and fruity taste, quite heavy. Some acidity to balance it all off. Full body, soft carbonation. Mildly bitter finish, with a long bittersweet aftertaste. Probably great with desserts - for me a bit too heavy-sweet to enjoy on its own.

Bottle shared @ Ölrepubliken. Pours dark reddish brown with a big off-white head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of lacing on the glass. Smell is malty, sweet and full-bodied with dried sweet fruits, liquorice root, ginger, hazelnuts, wood and spices. Taste is malty, sweet and spicy with sweet fruits, alcohol, cherries, nutmeg and other spices. Mouthfeel is surprisingly thin for the style but still medium bodied. finish is sweet, malty fruity and spicy.

Bottle @ RBBWG thanks to Diabel. Dark brown coloured beer with a medium off white head and some average carbonation. Rather fruity and slightly caramel malty and spicy hinted aroma. Full palate. Finish is smouth and strong, slightly hoppy with some nice balanced spicy touches. Very nice.

Bottle. Huge toffee nose, raisin and dried plums. Dark brown with lace. Flavors of vanilla, caramel, very, very malty, toffee, light fruits. Starts out shockingly malty in a great way, with rich caramel, but quickly gets tiring as it is too sweet and cloying. Still nice, but lacks the balance of a great abt.
