COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

0.33l bottle from Ølbutikken, shared with ClubGonzo and InBreak. Pours a brownish dark body with a small and bubbly sidesticking mild brown head. The aroma is really melony and fruit-yeasty with hints of chocolate and perhaps even a little apple? Soft carbonation, medium-bodied and the mouthfeel is both slick and slightly sticky. Flavors are somewhat sweet with candy and ripe banana, also quite fruity with lots of melon and some pear and perhaps even some light chocolatepaper-hints. Ends sweet with a light peppery finish and a nice little alcohol warming aftertaste. Yeah, not as good as the barrel aged version, but still quite nice.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Chestnut brown pour with a small off white ring around the top. A touch of citrus to start off the aroma with slight pepper and brandy notes throughout. Mild plum sauce to finish. Quite sweet and a bit of booze there. Dry biscuit, yeast and sultanas start off the relatively sweet taste. Sweet plums and a bit of heat at the finish. Medium sweet mouth feel with very soft carbonation. Not bad

Bottle, served in trappist glass. Black color; brown, moderate lasting head whith a nice lacing. Not very powerful but complex and durable aroma: malt notes (caramel, bread, vanilla) and a quite nice alcoholic background. Palate lighter than expected, light carbonation. Taste is mainly sweet; caramel, coffee, a little of prum and vanilla. Complex but I think not so balanced as in a trappist quadrupel.

suurjuust (844) - ESTONIA - MAR 6, 2013
Brown with red tinges, creamy tan head which diminishes quickly, but leaves a nice filmy coating. Some nice lacing. Spicy, boozy aroma with dried fruit, malt, burned sugar. Taste begins surprisingly thinly with malt and dried fruit, then the taste picks up some roasty notes, becomes more pronounced and the finish is spicy (pepper/cinnamon) and boozy once more. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, slick and oily palate with a healthy helping of booze.

Dark chocholate body, slight beige head. Watery sugar nose. Firmly sweet body but no Belgian warmth to the middle. Slightly dense finish of nothing real actually too formidable. Fairly safe, not at bogging as the Red Wine version.

Bottle, Sighthill Tasting
