Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

With Daria & Filip @MBR, Zagreb. Poured a very dark body with a big off white head. Heavy malty aroma with strong notes of apple compote, fruity, berryish, but doesn’t overextend itself. The taste is, obviously built on a solid sweet malty backbone, fruity, creamy, some notes of grapes, clean and balanced, only slightly oily. All in all a damn well executed beer.

Bottle from Mogwai Mat & Bar. Smell is not very inviting, though sweet and fresh. Pours brown with a small beige head. Taste is sweet and easy. Some raisins and a hint of malts. Palate is a bit to easy for a quadrupel beer. Overall a good alternative for many of the more famous trappist beers

Deep brown pour with a thick tan head. The nose is rich and softly sweet. Has a fairly bright plum and date nose. There is a touch of raisin and a little bit of cherry as well. Fairly boozy but not entirely unpleasant. There is a touch of fruity tartness that, along with the booze, cuts through the sweetness a bit. It’s got a fairly nice candi sugar flavour along with a soft stewed fruit sweetness. Nice brew.

330ml bottle. Deep mahogany with a foamy beige head. Flavors are bread, dark fruits, molasses, toffee, chocolate, spices and alcohol with woodsy hops. Medium to full body, moderate to high carbonation, oily texture. Not in the same league as its Belgian counterparts, but very enjoyable nonetheless.

Bottle & draught at Københavnske Øldage 2007. Clear brown - offwhite head. Berries, licorice, raisins, chokolate, caramel, sweetness, burned, roasted, fruity, freshness. Big and light sharp mouthfeeling. I would like to see how this beer developes over a 1-2 hour period, fx in front of a good film !! Just like I use other Abt/Quadrupel !!!

Sample at WLV with Mikkel. Cloudy, dark brown with small beige head. Aroma is a lot of alc but nice dark and red fruits with some molasses as well. Flavor is fruity, dry, alcy but pretty pleasing. Medium body and a little hot. Really nice.

For me this one seemed like it was going to be great and then fell down. Pours mahogany with a bit of a small tan head. The aroma has buttermilk biscuits, dense semi-sweet toffee, vanilla and cream - very nice. It has a medium body that is on the sharp side. The taste begins with thick alcoholic malt, some acidity and lots of burn ~ this was nothing like the aroma. The finish has more burn and is on the medicinal side.
