Blom (647), Odense, Denmark Mar 20, 2008 Brown with an acceptable head that drops quickly. Aroma of cucumber, basement, spice and dark fruits. The flavour is sweet, but more bitter than the normal trappist strong ale/quadrupel. It ends like bitter liquorice. The palate is way too thin and the carbonation too flat to really match the best of the trappists.
Sammy (3072), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 4, 2008 Crushinat0r’s bottle from Julio’s. Hit the bullseye on the style. Black, lots of lace. A mouthfeel of yeast, a meal of it. A good amount of sourish brown flavour here. Noting a feast of yeast aroma, the drinkability is very good for my favourite style. Fin (2188), Merton, Oxfordshire, England Aug 31, 2008 Bottle ordered amongst a mixed case from Cave Direct Beer Merchants, cheers Phil L, had this in Dorset 30-08-08 Pours dark, dark brown with an off-white creamy head. Big dark candy sugar in the first mouthfull, deceptively strong soft, super smooth everything is done in just the right measure, ice cream vanilla, some nice port touches, lovely, lovely beer. sebletitje (269), Tampa, Florida, USA Aug 30, 2008 bottle courtesy of Cartdan, 750ml Monk’s brew bottle.
Pours cloudy brown, white head.
Aroma of dark fruits, yeasty.
Taste dark fruits (fig, plum), some sweetness, lightly bitter, caramel, giving a sugary taste. kmweaver (2010), Takoma Park, Maryland, USA Aug 30, 2008 750mL bottle. Pours a clear, dark reddish-brown color; light-tan head with patchy fine-bubbled lacing. Brown sugar, nougat, and basic wet malts in the aroma; slightly bland. Medium-to-full mouthfeel: chewy dried dark fruits, basic chewy malts, and caramel upfront; basic, chewy caramel-driven quad; kind of straightforward and uninspired in the mouth. Lengthy finish: toasty malts, caramel, and dried dark fruits. Ernest (4227), Boulder, Colorado, USA Aug 24, 2008 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is medium to dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel, cookie), lightly yeasty (mold, basement), with notes of plum, grape, cheap chocolate. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Very dull and clumsy.
