COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

This beer smells very lively. Lots of stong malt, fig, spice, earthy notes at first. After a while it smells very doughy, with some fresh alcohol and candied sugar notes. Flavor is just superb in its smoothness. It has the flavor and delicacy of a some fresh salad greens. It really reminds me of biting into some very clean and fresh dark greens. The palate is simply something to take a vacation into. It just wraps the mouth in this softness that rivals a milk chocolate mousse.

Bloody great stuff. Thanks to my mate who brought this from the other side of the globe, a strong belgian style ale; creamy, malty, smooth and doesn’t taste like 10%. Great stuff, probably better on a colder day but slammed one down on a 33c day in Melbourne.

10oz on tap at Ei8ht Ball. Labeled "Monk’s Brew". Dark brown / red color. Thin tan head. Leaves great thicker sheets of lace. Bigger body. Super-smooth, lighter, crisp carbonation. More dry finish. Kind of creamy texture. Light slick. Wonderful dark fruit, some chocolate, vanilla. Raisin, moderate sweet taste, kinda dry finish. Light to moderate bitter. Nice mild warmth. Great belgian quad. Really smooth, bigger body, and creamy. Really good.

2014/12/22 - Pours a hazy brown/amber colour with a, thin, creamy khaki head that quickly reduces to a lingering surface film. Minimal lacing. Aroma is raisins, dates, figs, plumbs, spices, toffee and wood. Taste is raisins, dates, figs, yeast, spice, toffee and a hint if booze. Mouthfeel is medium, with sharp carbonation and a mildly boozy finish. Enjoyable, but if I want a trappist style Belgian strong I will just drink a Trappist Belgian strong. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle - 330ml. Dark brown, hazy body with a thin beige foamy head. Good malty/hoppy aroma with fruity, vanilla, yeasty, and flowery hints. Alcohol is well hidden. Its robust, well balanced taste carries oaky, plummy, and yeasty notes. Ends with a long, robust, bittersweet finish. Good stuff.

Poured into the cup revealed a dark, opaque and with a median turbidity brown color reminiscent of the famous Trappist Belgian. The foam is beige, good training, and consistent with medium bubbles and reasonable persistence. Some rents have dropped the sides of the bowl and a thin residual cover left on the net along the tasting. Perlage (bubbles) noticeable. The aroma was found to be very pleasant and moderately volatile. With a distinctly malty profile that led roasting notes (bitter chocolate), caramel and toasted and toffee, brown sugar, yeast (mitigated), subtle fruity plums, raisins and bananas and discreet bitterness with herbal and floral nuances. Alcohol volatilize well and remember port wine. On the palate the net presents liqueur and leaves pleasantly mouth full. Ready shows a strong malty base with even more intense impressions that those seized by smell. I noticed notes roasting (dark chocolate), caramel, toffee, toasted, brown sugar, yeast, fruity plums, raisins and banana grapes, wood, port wine and supporting hops herbal / floral (IBU 28). The final taste is pronounced and the aftertaste is sweet and alcoholic. The body is medium-high and the carbonation is average. Alcohol ABV 10.0% is slightly noticeable and causes pleasant warming. Palatability (drinkability), despite the malted profile, it is commendable! This Quadruppel has a strong presence malt keeping the yeast in action for longer, but has low hopping, alcohol only noticed the heat generated at the end of the sip. The Brewery Mikkeller is lavish in making experiments, without holding faithfully to the classic characteristics of the styles. This Monk’s Elixir, becomes just like the Belgian classic, but has its virtues. Malted (balance a little short), with good complexity and robustness, provided a great tasting.

The aroma is very sweet. There is also some pilsner and IPA in the aroma. The color is brown/black. The taste is fresh and reminds me of a trappist beer. A light and slightly sweet taste. It feels very light on the tongue. An excellent beer!
