Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

This beer smells very lively. Lots of stong malt, fig, spice, earthy notes at first. After a while it smells very doughy, with some fresh alcohol and candied sugar notes. Flavor is just superb in its smoothness. It has the flavor and delicacy of a some fresh salad greens. It really reminds me of biting into some very clean and fresh dark greens. The palate is simply something to take a vacation into. It just wraps the mouth in this softness that rivals a milk chocolate mousse.

Bottle at home. Over two year old bottle. Pours a deep, hazy, dark brown color with a huge, soapy, beige head. Compact aroma of Belgian yeast, brown sugar, game meat, heather, dried fruit, nuts, leather, roasted malt and cocoa. The flavor is rich with tones of licorice, alcohol, coffee, roasted malt, brown sugar and grass. Has a dry ending. Full-bodied, silky and slick mouth feel, and a surprisingly medium bitterness. A solid, strong Belgian ale which is a little more roasted and hoppy than the classics.

Yeasty, alcohol, dried fruits, vanilla, raisins, earthy, grass, herbs, spicy. Brown/ruby colour, medium beige head, lacing. Heavy sweetness, soft bite, lightly salty, lightly sour. Good flavours, but to me it lacks a quality that is found in the best Belgian examples of the style. Fullbodied, lively carbonation, warming finish. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Arpma of toasted malt, biscuits, dried fruits and alcohol In taste medium sweet with caramel, candi sugar and fruits. Nice but sligthly watery for a quad. Dry in the finish with medium bitterness.

330ml bottle from Mikkeller online shop. Pours deep mahogany with beige head. Aroma is sweet dark fruits. Taste verges a bit far on the sweet side of a Belgian Dark Ale initially, but settles into familiar Chimay Bleu territory soon enough. Decent effort.

Spettacolare interpretazione di una quadruppel da parte di Mikkeller. L’aspetto è perfetto, sembra un bordeaux scuro, con schiuma beige, abbondante, fine e decisamente persistente. L’aroma è molto liquoroso e speziato. In bocca dà il meglio di se. Liquorosa, caramellosa, frutta passita, sempre molto equilibrata e mai stucchevole. Malgrado il corpo strutturato e l’alcool molto alto, risulta facilmente bevibile, senza che l’alcool dia alla testa. Mikkeller ha fatto centro.

Bottle from craft brew shop in Florida brought to me by a friend. Poured into a fat bottomed tulip. Aroma of malts, sugar and slight burn from alcohol. Appearance is dark with a half in brown tinted head. Tastes come in with a slight booze burn along with candi sugar sweetness then melds into a blunt malty note then dissapates with a slight spiciness from the yeast intertwined with an earthy note I can not put my finger on. Pretty damn good.

Piana beżowa, średnio pęcherzykowa, pozostaje w postaci kożuszka do końca degustacji. Barwa mahoniowa, dość klarowna. W zapachu oczywiście suszone i kandyzowane owoce z wybijającymi się figami, gruszkami i rodzynkami, miód spadziowy, likier karmelowy oraz lekko kwaskowa nutka czerwonej porzeczki. Przyjemny aromat, ale nie dorównuje swą intensywnością najlepszym belgijskim Quadruplom typu Rochefort Trappistes 10. W smaku za to pierwsza liga - wszystko to co w zapachu jest tu wyraźnie wyeksponowane, znów na pierwszym planie suszona gruszka, figa, daktyl i jabłko, da się też wyczuć świeże ciemne winogrono, pieprz, melasę i odrobinę brązowego cukru, przy czym piwo nie jest lepiące czy wyklejające, raczej półsłodkie. W afterteasie pozostaje rozgrzewający alkohol, który nie jest może drażniący, ale leżakowanie dało by tu pożądany efekt "ułożenia". Nagazowanie średnie, drobne, lekko szczypiące. Goryczka średnia (jak na Quadrupla), alkoholowa.

Vierte castaño oscuro con media corona de espuma que perdura, aromas a caramelo, frutos rojos, licor y uvas pasas; en boca entrada potente con ligero amargor y final dulce, el alcohol se aprecia al paso por garganta , buen cuerpo y carbónico medio, pos gusto largo, licoroso, maltoso y dulce, pero sin resultar empalagoso, cerveza equilibrada y estilo bien conseguido
