COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

This beer smells very lively. Lots of stong malt, fig, spice, earthy notes at first. After a while it smells very doughy, with some fresh alcohol and candied sugar notes. Flavor is just superb in its smoothness. It has the flavor and delicacy of a some fresh salad greens. It really reminds me of biting into some very clean and fresh dark greens. The palate is simply something to take a vacation into. It just wraps the mouth in this softness that rivals a milk chocolate mousse.

Really good. Strong bready, yeast and spice aroma and flavors. Pretty deep brown color with a decent head. Good thickness to the brew.

Virtually black. Aroma and flavour are plentiful with sugary dried fruits. Certainly very rich and sweet and reminiscent of strong, dark Trappist ales. Sweetness perhaps a bit too high.

Bottle shared thanks to richthevillan. Brown beer with medium head. Aroma of toffee, yeast and spice. Taste is stewed malts, toffee, spice and sweet malts. Very good, could do with more body.

Bottle from Cotteridge Wines; hazy chestnut brown pour with a frothy beige head, aroma has dark fruits along with some sweet caramel, taste has some yeasty action along with dark fruits, quite thin mouthfeel, candied fruits, some Xmas spices.

Tap at El Bait Shop. Very deep maroon pour with a soapy head. Rich quad aroma and taste - dark fruit and yeast. Brown sugar. I feel like I’m picking up a hint of wood but I’m not sure that I’m supposed to.

Aroma is burnt caramel, malts and very slightly cloying sweetness. The flavor is malts, fruit/berries, slight Belgian yeast and a mildly sweet/tart finish.

Draft. Brown pour, a sticky sweet quad, some dark fruits and spice, pretty typical.

Ligh redish brown color, nice sticky head. Very sweet beer, a bit to sweet for me, but nonetheless it has some quite interesting frutiy notes - It has kind of a raspberry sensation.
