COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Brewed by Mikkeller at De Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi, Belgium. Known as Monk’s Brew in the U.S.
Ingredients : Water, malts (pils and pale), candy syrup, brown sugar, hops (northern brewer, hallertauer and styrian goldings) and ale yeast
Monk’s Elixir is a heavy dark Belgian ale inspired by the Trappist monasteries of Rochefort and Westvleteren. The beer style, characterized by its high content of alcohol, distinguishes itself by its dominant yeast character, delicious malt background and balanced hop notes.

Bottle 33 cl. Pours a reddish brown with a big tan head and a sweet aroma of cherries, caramel and sugar syrup. The taste is sweet and a bit alcoholic, but surprisingly complex. There’s lots of sweet malts, with notes of toffee, dark chocolate, overripe fruits, brown sugar and some yeast. The finish is a nice lasting mixture of medium-bitter hops, some sticky sweetness and warming alcohol. Very nice!

330ml bottle. Pours a big frothy tan head and has a hazy brown appearance. Lacing is ok. Aromas of bread, roasty malts, resin hops, raisins. Flavours are mostly roasted malts, notes of earthy and resin hops, fairly strong raisins notes. Has a bit of a yeasty finish. Some brown sugar becomes a bit more noticeable the longer it sits. Full body, thin oily feel. lively carbonation. Finish is a bit bitter and astringent. Good stuff!

Bottle from the LCBO. Clear dark ruby-brown body (which probably would’ve been hazy if I hadn’t kept the last glug in the bottle) with a small and tight tan head. Aroma of caramelized sugar, bit of dark cherry and vanilla, faint hint of clove. Medium-thin body. Flavour is a bit muddled - starts with sweet caramel, but quickly dries out with peppery yeast and an off-balance and astringent bitterness. Not a fan.

Bottle from the LCBO. Murky dark brown pour with a small lingering tan head. Nose is yeast, roasted malts, toffee and ripe fruit. Lightly sweet toffee, plum, raisin and banana with a balancing chocolate bitterness and a tartness throughout. Alcohol is well integrated. Medium creamy mouth with average carbonation.

330 ml bottle (monks brew). cannot find evidence that this is brewed in belgium? Pours dark brown with large fluffy head and some lacing. sweet fruity aroma, taste does not dissapoint, sweet with notes of plum and syrup. Does not share the alcohol character of the rocheforts despite the high abv.

Decent quad style beer, complex yeast, chocolate and coffee aromas, with a sweet flavour. A final hop dig right at the end makes it easy to drink.
