4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Pours cloudy very dark brown with small tan head. Dark aroma of malt, caramel and dried fruit. Roasty, malty flavour with notes of caramel and coffee beans. Very well balanced. Dryish aftertaste. Needs to be re-rated as the bottle had been open for 24 hours. Still, very good.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
500ml bottle from Sam’s, Durham. One of the better examples of the style I’ve had in years, and a nice bargain to boot. Nice soupy dark brown pour, with a thick silken head, tons of lacing, and an overall appealingly substantive look. Rich and chocolatey as fuck, with dry notes everywhere for balance. Really a superlative example of the style, elegant and never too boozy.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours an opaque very dark brown with a brown head that quickly amounts to a soapy long lasting ring around the glass and leaves great lace. Aroma is rich sweet maltiness, licorice, toast, dried plums, raisins, toffee and mild alcohol. Flavour is roasted malts just short of being burnt, medium bitterness, dark malt dryness, rich sweet malt, toffee, dried fruits and alcohol.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours an opaque black with a big frothy brown head. Aroma of chocolate, sweet dried fruits like prunes and dates, cocoa and nice floral hop notes. Taste is sweet dried fruits, chocolate, bitter cocoa, slight roasted malts and a nice smooth bitterness on the finish. Finishes slightly dry but has a really good balance of sweet malts, bitterness and alcohol warmth. Would definitely drink this again and again.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rich dark brown with tan head and nice pointillist lacing. Nice rounded choco malt aroma, bit of booze. Gorgeous on the palate, bit of carbonation sizzling the rich and earthy taste onto the tongue. Top drawer porter, slightly heavy on the boozy finish.
