bottle. deep brown body with a small light brown ring of a head and little retention. simple, inky, dark chocolate is the first impression of the nose, though thereís some char (notes of liquid smoke and soy sauce are coming up) and light esters (plum, date, black cherry, dark fruits, etc.) that show up with time, but altogether the nose seems a bit plain and one-dimensional (a lot of chocolate syrup). low carbonation, medium-high body which dissolves late into a medium-thin finish. medium-low bitterness and low acid, light to moderate roasted grain astringency, though much cleaner than most of the De Proef Mikkeller beers, I have to agree with others. not too sweet, decent roast character with some mild malted milk ball notes and a touch of green hops (pine and a little bell pepper). overall itís a well-made strong porter but I wonder if a little more carbonation could give it a little more expression to those dark fruit esters and give the body a little more roundness and froth.

Bottle picked up at Zyn in Calgary Alberta. Pours pitch black with dark tan head that is a ring, flecks of lacing. Nose is so sweet and inviting. Roasted malt, caramel, chocolate and vanilla, maybe a touch of coffee. Tastes like dark chocolate, cold coffee, boozy with a bit of bite. Vanilla smooth. Nice silky mouthfeel.

RABinCO (1399) - Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA - FEB 19, 2013
Holy cow! Pours deep brown, deep cola. Little carbonation that provides a slight tan halo that leaves loose lacing. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, coffee, a bit of soy sauce and stone fruits. Taste is equally complex. Lots of the same notes with a bit of brown sugar and finishes a bit dry. A chocolate taste lingers for awhile. At $5.99 a bottle wish Iíd bought more!

durhambeer (2500) - Durham, North Carolina, USA - FEB 11, 2013
500 ml bottle from Samís Quik Shop for a cool $5.99. Pours black with just a bit of light through the edges. Light brown head at first but not much more after. Nose shows a marshmallow lactose that complexifies the more expected roast, coffee, and chocolate notes. Some mineral notes. Also some stone fruits. Taste adds a bit of sweet and bitter. Palate is chalky dry. So much going on here. Really quite lovely.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately to heavily malty (coffee, roasted grain, dark chocolate, caramel), with light notes of tar, cassis, juniper leaves. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, velvety/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. FINALLY, a good Mikkeller beer. I expected this to be another drain pour, but thatís definitely not the case. I must assume this is because this was brewed at Amager instead of the abysmal De Proef. Indeed, thatís the only reason I bought this, and thankfully itís surprisingly good. Rich malt character, very coffee-ish and enticing. Reminds me a bit of Amagerís own Rye Porter, in fact. None of the usual dirty De Proef off notes, quite clean and enjoyable to drink. Itís ultimately too expensive and sweet-and-boozy for me to buy again, but I quite enjoyed this.

UPDATED: APR 4, 2015 8%. 500ml bottle at home. Pours black with a fine, coffee-cream, long-lasting head. Inviting aroma of roast malts and caramel, some dark fruits. Taste has a lovely balance of bitter and sweet, like memory of playing with a childhood friend you?re no longer in touch with. More coffee and roast flavours, some sweetness. Full-bodied, but not too rich, Lovely smooth finish. One of the best.
