American Style is an international collaboration between the godfather of all gypsy brewers, Mikkeller, and one of the new stars of the US tenant brewing scene, Prairie Artisan Ales. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Chase Healey journeyed to Flanders to brew this twist on an American-style IPA with Dirk Naudts at De Proefbrouwerij . Predictably, it’s loaded with West Coast hops. What you might not have guessed, though, is that it was fermented exclusively with a special strain of Brettanomyces claussenii that’s light on the funkiness, but really aromatic. It leaves behind an astoundingly well attenuated IPA, which means it’s good for drinkin’. A serious amount of West Coast hops are added to the whirlpool and as dry hops to compliment the tropical notes from the Brett.

Draft at the Kings Arms - London. Pours clear orange-gold with a foamy white head. Lots of fruity hops in the aroma, some tropical, some citrusy. Medium sweet flavor with more juicy citrus, some rindy bitterness. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lightly bitter on the finish with pale bread sweetness, more fruity hops. Not bad overall.

Draught @ Real Gastropub, Honolulu. Cloudy light amber, thin head. Aroma is kind of overripe and stale. Kicks off boozy, almost barrelly, and the hops are still old, though the are more in the background here. Not sure I can get behind this, needs brighter hops.

Draft at Šoljica Cafe in central Belgrade, where else? Hazy golden color. Nice aroma of dusty overripe apricots and peaches. Taste is slightly funky, dusty, peppery stone fruit. Very tasty.

Thanks go out to Craft Shack for the bottle. A very pretty IPA; bright gold with a solid and long lasting head of foam. I get that Brett in the smell. Mixed with grapefruit, it gives me a tropical fruity nose. What worked in the smell seems to fall short for me in the taste. The grapefruit and Brett combo just doesn’t appeal to me taste wise. Dry, bitter, Brett..does Brett really need to infiltrate IPAs? I find it makes the beer, this beer, a chore to drink, and that doesn’t have anything to do with the abv. Nothing wrong with the mouth feel. This is not something I’d want to drink again...

Bottle shared at the Syb Pig in Boca. Poured into small snifters. Golden hazy copper with a thick fluffy head. Head lasted and laced. Aroma is fresh pine, wet cut grass, hay field, and slight brett funkiness. The taste is fresh piney hops, cut grass, tart lemon, slight citrus, and a well balanced malt. Finish is crisp and slight tart. Heavy carbonation and tingly mouth.

On tap at Ölhus Stockholm, Helsinki. Pours hazy amber with a little white head. The aroma displays citrus fruitiness, resinous pine and a touch of caramel. Taste is dry and medium to heavy bitter. Not much initial sweetness. Flavours include fresh fruits and pine. The palate is medium bodied, slightly sticky and a bit aggressive carbonation. Fairly strong for an IPA but still very drinkable.
