COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
American Style is an international collaboration between the godfather of all gypsy brewers, Mikkeller, and one of the new stars of the US tenant brewing scene, Prairie Artisan Ales. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Chase Healey journeyed to Flanders to brew this twist on an American-style IPA with Dirk Naudts at De Proefbrouwerij . Predictably, it’s loaded with West Coast hops. What you might not have guessed, though, is that it was fermented exclusively with a special strain of Brettanomyces claussenii that’s light on the funkiness, but really aromatic. It leaves behind an astoundingly well attenuated IPA, which means it’s good for drinkin’. A serious amount of West Coast hops are added to the whirlpool and as dry hops to compliment the tropical notes from the Brett.

Bottle from Bierkoning, BB 28-11-16, large sample. Almost clear golden color, big frothy off-white head. Aroma is hoppy, citrus, pineapple, peach, slight funky spicy yeast. Medium bitter in taste, citrussy and pineapple again. Bit candy like. Brett is definitely present, but mostly with fruity and tropical notes. Oersoep style, nice.

[6937-20141129] Bottle. Light grainy aroma. Slightly hazy, pale orange body with a medium-lasting foamy white head. Light fruity flavour has a nice finish. Medium body. Good. (7/3/7/3/14) 3.4

On tap at proletariat. Pours a clear amber with a medium sized head. Yeast and musk on the nose. Medium bodied with a good bit of yeast and a touch of earthy citrus. Long musky finish, warming yeast. Nice sruff.

Copper blond, white head. Nose of citrus, melon, vegetables, mint. Light body, lot of carbonation. Taste is similar, more bitterness from the end to the aftertaste.

Calling this an American IPA is totally misleading. And to say that it’s "light on the funkiness" is also misleading. If you don’t like saisons, but do like hoppy IPA’s, this is a waste of your money (and it’s not cheap!).

Bottle... Poured golden amber with a nice forming head. Brett IPAs are starting to hit their stride and I’m getting into them. Most for me have been failures but when one comes around like American Style they nail it. Bitterness and grassy hop with full mouthfeel and subtly funky bits of yeast spice. I wish I had another bottle to see how this develops.

Tester. Erbierschof Tab. Riecht sehr urchig, manche meinen Söilistall. Sehr hopfig-spritziges Bier, erfrischend aber stark.

draught@Erzbierschof - cloudy dark orange beer with a long lasting pale beige foam; nice lace; pretty fair hoppy aroma of orange peel, tangerines; full-bodied, some sweetness, assertive and decentlly bitter, some residual sweetness, long fruity hoppy finish; light estery

Bomber, pours a light straw color with a fluffy, pillowy head, taste is the funk that you’d expect from the Brett yeast, but since I enjoy farmhouse ales, I really enjoyed it. The funk of the Brett yeast really masks the IPA character that I expected, but not in an offensive way. I would buy this again.
