American Style is an international collaboration between the godfather of all gypsy brewers, Mikkeller, and one of the new stars of the US tenant brewing scene, Prairie Artisan Ales. Mikkel Borg Bjergsø and Chase Healey journeyed to Flanders to brew this twist on an American-style IPA with Dirk Naudts at De Proefbrouwerij . Predictably, it’s loaded with West Coast hops. What you might not have guessed, though, is that it was fermented exclusively with a special strain of Brettanomyces claussenii that’s light on the funkiness, but really aromatic. It leaves behind an astoundingly well attenuated IPA, which means it’s good for drinkin’. A serious amount of West Coast hops are added to the whirlpool and as dry hops to compliment the tropical notes from the Brett.

on tap at braukunst live 2014 in munich. golden with a lingering shaving cream head; tart citric aroma; plenty of grapefruit and a chalky dry finish that lingers.

UPDATED: JUL 23, 2014 Strong aroma with plenty of citrus-like hops. Dry taste with citrus notes and strong bitter finish. Full body. One of the best american pale ales I’ve ever tasted.

Small, dense white head over cold-hazed orange beer. Aromatic hops’ nose, initially, sweet-ish and fruity, towards nectarine and lychee; also sunflower seed and more than a bit spicy (coriander? horseradish? -,certainly almonds). Faintly fruity (citrus, mainly) and again (root)spices, difficult to pinpoint. I suppose it’s the Bretts, really, but anyway, I find it quite UN-American. Not oxydation, rather...tiredness? Quite carbonated feel, light body. Average at best.

Draught. Cloudy, light amber beer. Creamy head. Tight citrus punch on the nose, whiffs of elderberry and creamy caramel. Round, creamy flavor with mellow but fruity bitterness. Light resiny bite in the finish. I miss harder hop kick. Medium body, creamy texture.

This an interesting collaboration of styles and brewing methodologies: big hops plus complex brett. They got the balance right. Not too hoppy though they're quite pronounced on the nose and palette. Some nice residual malty sweetness plus light funkiness balances it out. This would be a great beer to pair with game or a pork....

Bottle from CBX. Cloudy golden pour with a bubbly white head and sheets of lace. Aroma is floral, lemon grass, jasmine, slightly herbal, bright citrus, and mild yeast funkiness. Floral is very similar, there’s a floral, grassy, citrus pop to it, jasmine with mild to light Brett funk coming it. Finishes dry with a mild bitterness. Medium body and carbonation.
